Narrative
I WAS CLRED DIRECT TO GERING LOM TO HOLD NW; MAINTAIN 7300 FT. AS SOON AS I TURNED INBOUND; ESTABLISHED IN THE HOLD; ZDV CLRED ME FOR THE APCH TO RWY 12 LOC BACK COURSE. THE UNUSUAL PART OF THIS CLRNC WAS FOR ME TO MAINTAIN 7300 FT TILL GERING. INSTEAD OF ASKING ATC OF THEIR EXACT INTENTIONS; I SWITCHED TO THE CTAF SINCE I WAS NOT CLRED TO DSND TO THE LOWER PUBLISHED ALT ONCE ESTABLISHED INBOUND; BUT INSTEAD; TOLD TO MAINTAIN MY PRESENT ALT TILL THE FAF. I FELT THIS CLRNC DID NOT ENTAIL THE COURSE REVERSAL (PROC TURN) REQUIRED TO DSND ON THE INTERMEDIATE APCH COURSE. I INSTEAD COMPLETED THE APCH FROM MY POS 9.5 DME FROM BFF ESTABLISHED ON THE INTERMEDIATE APCH COURSE. SINCE I WAS GIVEN AN ALT RESTR TILL THE FAF THAT WAS HIGHER THAN THE PUBLISHED INTERMEDIATE APCH ALT; I FEEL THAT MY DECISION TO NOT CONDUCT THE PROC TURN WAS WHAT CTR WANTED DUE TO ACFT WAITING TO DEPART AT SCOTTSBLUFF. IF FACED WITH THE SAME CONDITIONS; I WILL ASK ATC IF THEY WANT THE FULL APCH AND IF NOT THEN ASK FOR A LOWER ALT. WHEN I CANCELED WITH CTR AFTER LNDG THEY DID NOT EXPRESS ANY DISSATISFACTION. AS WITH MANY MATTERS OF SAFETY; BETTER COM CAN GO A LONG WAY TO REDUCING THE RISK.
