Narrative

WX BRIEF BY HAWTHORNE -- CAVU. NO AIRMETS; NO SIGMETS. GND (VOR) OTS. DEPARTED SBA TO GVO DIRECT MQO DIRECT PRB (VOR). LAX FLT FOLLOWING ANNOUNCED TFC 1 MI; SAME ALT AND DIRECTION AS ME AND I AM OVERTAKING THAT TFC (A SKY LANE); THEREFORE; I DEVIATE 15 DEGS TO R BY PASSING MQO VOR DIRECT PRB AT 6500 FT. I SEE 'THE' ARPT ON MY L WHICH I BELIEVE TO BE PRB AND ANNOUNCE ON CTAF 123.0; BUT I LAND AT SBP WITHOUT LNDG CLRNC BECAUSE I THINK I AM AT SBP. UPON LNDG; TWR ASKS ME TO TALK WITH THEM; WHICH I DO; AND AFTER A PLEASANT DISCUSSION; THEY SAY THEY WILL JUST CONSIDER IT A 'LEARNING EXPERIENCE AND FORGET IT.' I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE I DID SUCH A STUPID THING. THE WX WAS CAVU WITH 30 MI VISIBILITY. I HAD PILOTAGE GOING; VORS; LORAN AND GPS. ALL INSTS TELLING ME CORRECTLY; BUT WHEN I SAW THE ARPT ON MY L (IT WAS SBP AND I THOUGHT IT WAS PRB) BECAUSE I THOUGHT I COULD SEE 30 MI VISIBILITY. HOWEVER I LANDED WITH TFC RWY 29 AT SBP WITHOUT A LNDG CLRNC. WHAT TO DO IN FUTURE TO PREVENT: 1) LOOK AT ARPT DIAGRAM MUCH MORE CAREFULLY ON SECTIONAL CHART. 2) BELIEVE MY NAV INSTS; IE; VOR; DME; LORAN AND GPS WHICH WERE ALL ACCURATE! 3) ASK FLT FOLLOWING TO CONFIRM. 4) IF IN DOUBT; OVERFLY THE ARPT AT ALT TO CONFIRM WHICH ARPT IT IS (ABOUT CLASS D AIRSPACE) AND TALK TO APCH AND TWR.
