A DC 9-30 WAS RETURNED TO SVC WITH THE INCORRECT #1 ENG C1 AND C2 FAN DISC INSTALLED. ERROR DISCOVERED PRIOR TO FLT.

Narrative

10/SUN/97 WE HAD A C2 FAN CHANGE ON ACFT YYY #1 ENG. WHILE WAITING FOR THE ACFT TO RETURN FROM A BREATHER CHK; I LOOKED FOR A C2 TO USE. I USED THE SHOP'S QUICK REF FOR A PART NUMBER AND FOUND THAT PART NUMBER TO BE DELETED. I WENT INTO THE SYS COMPUTER PARTS CODE IMQ TO FIND INTERCHANGEABILITIES. THAT PAGE GAVE ME 745902 AS AN INTERCHANGEABLE PART NUMBER. WHEN I BROUGHT UP THAT PART NUMBER IT CAME UP AS 07-7233-9-9015. KNOWING THAT PART NUMBER WAS A 9-11A PER COMPUTER AND NOT SURE OF ITS INTERCHANGEABILITY; I CALLED THE ENG DESK AND HE IN TURN PUT ME IN TOUCH WITH MATERIAL SVCS. THEY GAVE ME THE TRACKING TAG NUMBER AND SERIAL NUMBER OF THE FAN THAT WAS ALLOCATED. I THEN WENT BACK TO THE COMPUTER AND IT WAS DOWN FOR AT LEAST 2 1/2 HRS. I BROUGHT BBB WITH ME TO FIND THE FAN ALLOCATED FROM MATERIAL SVCS AND CCC VERIFIED THE SERIAL NUMBER AND TT NUMBER AND SAID THE FAN WAS IN OUR SHOP. WE FOUND THE FAN ALLOCATED WHICH WAS A 07-7233-9-9015. I TOLD DDD AND BBB TO START DISASSEMBLING THE ENG. I TRIED SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO REACH MY SUPVR WITH NO SUCCESS. AFTER INSPECTION COMPLETED THEIR PARTS INSPECTION AND VERIFICATIONS I STILL COULD NOT GET ANY FURTHER FEEDBACK AND DECIDED TO PROCEED. EEE AND MYSELF PROCEEDED WITH THE INSTALLATION. AT XC00 DECIDED TO CALL IN FFF AND GGG WHO CAME IN TO FINISH. WHEN THEY TOOK OVER IT WAS READY FOR A TORQUE AND STRETCH. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATES THE WRONG C1-C2 FAN DISC WAS INSTALLED; A JT8D-15 DISC WAS INSTALLED ON A JT8D-9 ENG BUT WAS DETECTED PRIOR TO FLT. THE RPTR SAID THE COMBINATION OF THE PARTS COMPUTER BEING DOWN AND STORES AND THE ENG DESK GIVING THE SAME TRACKING TAG NUMBER OF THE ASSEMBLY ALLOCATED FOR THE ENG ASSURED THEY HAD THE CORRECT PART. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR OF ACN 384179: THE RPTR STATED THE C1 AND C2 DISC WAS INSTALLED WHEN ASSIGNED TO COMPLETE THE CLOSE UP OF THE ENG. THE RPTR SAID THE ENG WAS CLOSED UP AND SIGNED OFF. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR OF ACN 384319: THE RPTR STATED THAT ASSISTANCE WAS GIVEN TO THE LEAD MECH IN FINDING THE CORRECT C1-C2 DISC ASSEMBLY BY THE RPTR. THE RPTR SAID WERE SATISFIED WITH THE ASSEMBLY STORES HAD ALLOCATED AND THE TAG NUMBERS WERE VERIFIED WITH THE ENG DESK.
