MD88 FLC IN A HURRY MAKE ERRORS ON ENG START RESULTING IN OVERTEMP AND RETURN TO GATE FOR MAINT INSPECTION.
Narrative
ON PUSHBACK; CAPT SAID TO START L ENG; WHICH WAS NORMAL. BEFORE I STARTED THE AFTER START FLOW; I ASKED IF HE WANTED #2 STARTED; HE SAID NO. 1/2 WAY THROUGH MY AFTER START FLOW; HE TOLD ME TO START #2. I DIDN'T NOTICE I HAD ALREADY TURNED OFF THE IGNITION; SO WHEN STARTING #2; IT DIDN'T LIGHT OFF. I KNEW IMMEDIATELY WHAT HAPPENED AND ABORTED THE START. DURING THE ABORT; THE CAPT FAILED TO TURN THE FUEL SWITCH OFF; SO ON THE NEXT START; I NOTICED IMMEDIATELY THE ENG LIT OFF AND COULD TELL IT WAS GOING HOT. I THEN REALIZED THE FUEL SWITCH WAS ON; TOLD THE CAPT AND TURNED THE IGNITION OFF. THE MAX EGT WAS APPROX 530 DEGS C; ABOUT 65 DEGS C ABOVE PUBLISHED LIMIT. WE RETURNED TO THE GATE; CALLED MAINT AND LEFT ABOUT 1 HR LATER. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: 1) WE WERE LATE AND TRYING TO HURRY UP. 2) TO ME; THE CAPT HAD A VERY CONDESCENDING ATTITUDE AND WHEN I FAILED TO TURN ON THE IGNITION ON THE FIRST START; I COULD TELL HE WAS MAD; SO I FAILED TO NOTICE HE LEFT THE FUEL SWITCH ON AND ALTHOUGH I THOUGHT OF DRY MOTORING THE ENG; I FORGOT TO MENTION THIS WHEN HE ORDERED THE RESTART WITH A FRUSTRATED TONE. 3) BEING ON PROBATION (WITHIN FIRST YR) I LET THE CAPT MAKE ME NERVOUS BECAUSE OF HIS ATTITUDE WHICH I FELT CAUSED ME TO MISS THINGS I NORMALLY WOULDN'T (IGNITION; FUEL SWITCH; AND DRY MOTOR).
