Synopsis

FLC OF B727-100C BEING MARSHALLED TO PARKING HAS WINGTIP HIT A K-LOADER. CAPT STOPS THE ACFT THOUGH BEING MARSHALLED FORWARD.

Narrative

UPON COMPLETION OF FLT AND TAXI IN FOR PARKING; THE R WINGTIP OF THE B727-100C STRUCK A GUARD RAIL OF A K- LOADER. THE ACFT WAS MARSHALLED DOWN A LONG RECTANGULAR SHAPED RAMP AND DIRECTED TO TAXI TOWARD THE R. A K-LOADER WAS POSITIONED TO UNLOAD FREIGHT TOWARD THIS DIRECTION; AND WE BELIEVED THEY WERE ATTEMPTING TO PARK US AS TO HAVE THE K-LOADER OFF THE L WING TO UNLOAD. AS THE NOSE OF THE ACFT APCHED THE K-LOADER; THE MARSHALLER GAVE US A SHARP L TURN TO NOW PUT THE K-LOADER TO OUR R WINGTIP. WE WERE AWARE OF THE PROX OF THE K-LOADER; AND DECIDED THAT EVEN THOUGH WE HAD WING WALKERS; TO OPEN THE L2 WINDOW TO GET A BETTER LOOK. THERE WERE 2 LIGHT STANDS; 1 IN FRONT OFF THE R NOSE; AND 1 OFF THE R AFT WINGTIP; SHINING FORWARD. THE LIGHT ANGLE CAME ACROSS SUCH THAT IT BLOCKED OUT (OR BLACKED OUT) THE VIEW OF THE WING. I INSTRUCTED THE CAPT TO STOP. WITHIN 1 SECOND; I SAW PLEXIGLAS FLYING THROUGH THE AIR (REFLECTED BY THE LIGHT). I BRAKED THE ACFT MYSELF; BUT THE CAPT WAS ALREADY FULLY ON THEM AND STOPPED. HE SET THE PARKING BRAKE. THE WING WALKER CONTINUED TO GIVE A THUMBS UP AND THE MARSHALLER CONTINUED SIGNALING TO MOVE FORWARD. I FINALLY HAD TO POINT OUT THE WINDOW TO DRAW THEIR ATTN TO IT. AFTER BEING ON THE RAMP MYSELF; IT BECAME APPARENT WITH THE ANGLE OF THE LIGHT; THERE WAS NO POSSIBLE WAY FOR THEM TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SEE THE WINGTIP IN THIS BLINDING LIGHT. CORRECTIVE ACTION? LIGHTS SHOULD HAVE BEEN REMOVED. THIS EVENT OCCURRED AT JFK OFF TXWY CB.
