PLT GOT CONFUSED OVER WHICH WAY THE TWR WANTED HIM TO TURN AND WHAT TFC PATTERN TO FLY. IN THE PROCESS HE GOT CLOSE TO A C172 IN THE TFC PATTERN FOR RWY 25R AT DVT. ONCE THE ARPT WAS LOCATED THE ACFT LANDED WITHOUT ANY OTHER PROBS.

SMA X (BE35) CALLED INBOUND TO DVT FROM THE N 3 MI OUT; ALREADY IN CLASS D AIRSPACE INSTRUCTED TO ENTER R DOWNWIND RWY 25R. MOMENTS LATER SMA X COULD NOT BE LOCATED. USING IDENT FEATURE WITH TWR BRITE SMA X WAS LOCATED OVER SDL INSIDE CLASS D AIRSPACE. SMA X WAS INSTRUCTED TO EXIT SDL CLASS D AIRSPACE WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO ENTER STRAIGHT IN RWY 25R AT DVT. SMA X DID NOT RPT HIS RWY 25R STRAIGHT IN; FLEW OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO THE R DOWNWIND CAUSING CONFLICT WITH C172 (SMA Y) WHO INFORMED ME OF THE BE35. I NOW HAD VISUAL CONTACT WITH SMA X AND INSTRUCTED HIM TO MAKE A R 180 DEGS; MAKE R TFC TO RWY 25R. SMA X MADE A R 360 DEGS AND CONTINUED WBOUND. I INSTRUCTED SMA X TO CONTINUE THE R TURN AND FLY DIRECTLY EBOUND. AT THIS POINT SMA X HAD REGAINED HIS BEARINGS AND LANDED RWY 25R WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 393581: WE CALLED NORMAL APCH POS TO SKYRANCH; CAREFREE; AZ; AT 15 MI AND WERE TOLD ARPT CLOSED DUE TO MISHAP. WE ELECTED TO DIVERT TO DEER VALLEY; PHOENIX; CALLED UP DEER VALLEY TWR; BUT WERE 1 MI INSIDE THEIR AIRSPACE WHEN THEY RESPONDED. TOLD TO TAKE R DOWNWIND TO RWY 25R. WE ACKNOWLEDGED AND COMPLIED. REQUESTED BASE TURN; BUT TWR COULD NOT IDENT US AND WE EXTENDED DOWNWIND WHICH TOOK US INTO SCOTTSDALE AIRSPACE. WE WERE THEN DIRECTED TO FLY N HEADING; THEN W FOR DIRECT INTO RWY 25R. ACFT FLYING E PASSED US ABOUT 1/4 MI OFF L WING. THEN DIRECTED TO DO 180 DEGS WHICH TOOK US N OF FIELD. WE THEN HAD TO AND WERE DIRECTED TO TURN EBOUND N OF FIELD FOR SECOND ATTEMPT. TWR CALLED OUR BASE THIS TIME AND WE LANDED SAFELY.
