Narrative
WHEN I BOUGHT A LUSCOMBE 8E FROM THE COMPANY STORE I ASKED THE COMPANY TO PROVIDE A CERTIFIED FLT INSTRUCTOR TO INSTRUCT ME UNTIL I ACHIEVED BOTH COMPETENCY IN THE ACFT AND 5 HRS OF TIME IN TYPE IN ORDER TO MEET MY INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS. I FLEW 3.9 HRS WITH X. THE COMPANY THEN SENT Y TO CONTINUE MY TRAINING. WE FLEW FROM THE CHANDLER MUNICIPAL ARPT TO A PVT DIRT AIRSTRIP AT THE U OF A MARICOPA AG CTR TO PRACTICE TKOFS AND LNDGS. WINDS WERE LIGHT TO MODERATE AND VARIABLE; SKIES WERE CLR; AND VISIBILITY WAS 20 MI. AFTER SEVERAL TOUCH AND GOES; WE DECIDED TO DO A FULL STOP WHEEL LNDG. THE APCH AND TOUCHDOWN WENT SMOOTHLY. THE TAIL WAS GOING DOWN WHEN THE AIRPLANE BEGAN TO SWERVE. AFTER A COUPLE OF MODERATE OSCILLATIONS; THE ACFT VEERED HARD TO THE L. I ADDED FULL R RUDDER; BUT THE ACFT STILL PULLED L. Y CALLED FOR PWR. I ADDED PWR; STILL HOLDING FULL R RUDDER. THE ACFT DEPARTED THE L SIDE OF THE RWY HITTING THE 2 FT BERM OF DIRT RUNNING THE LENGTH OF THE AIRSTRIP. THE LNDG GEAR SHEARED OFF AND WE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP 30 FT FROM THE POINT OF IMPACT WITH THE BERM. WE SHUT OFF THE GAS; THE MASTER SWITCH; AND THE MAGNETOS. THE ELT WAS NOT ACTIVATED BY THE FORCE OF THE IMPACT. BOTH Y AND I EXITED THE ACFT UNINJURED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 396841: LNDG PRACTICE WAS CONDUCTED AT A PVT DIRT STRIP. THE FIRST LNDG WAS A FULL STALL LNDG/TOUCH AND GO. THE SECOND-FIFTH LNDGS WERE WHEEL LNDGS (NOT TO A FULL STOP) TO WORK ON HEADING CTL DURING TRANSITION TO TAILWHEEL DOWN FOR FULL STOP; AND ALL WERE ADEQUATE FOR CTL SAFELY STOP. THE 6TH LNDG; PROPOSED FULL STOP; CTL DETERIORATED BELOW 50 MPH (APPROX); ACFT STARTED TO SWERVE L. I CALLED TO PLT; YOU NED PWR AND R RUDDERS; GET OUT OF HERE. PLT ADDED PWR AND R RUDDER. THE TAILWHEEL WAS STILL UP WHEN ACFT CONTACTED 2 FT BERM OF EDGE OF RWY AT APPROX 30 DEG ANGLE. ACFT BROKE BOTH LNDG GEAR LEGS; CROSSED BERM; AND CAME TO A STOP ON THE DIRT ROAD BTWN THE BERM AND A PLOWED FIELD; DISTANCE FROM BERM APPROX 25-30 FT.
