MOONEY ACFT TRANSITING CLASS 'B' AIRSPACE WAS INSTRUCTED BY ATC TO REMAIN E OF HILL AFB. RPTR ISTR DIDN'T HEAR THOSE INSTRUCTIONS; OSTENSIBLY DUE TO RADIO STATIC; AND ERRONEOUSLY ENTERED CLASS 'D' AIRSPACE.

Narrative

TOOK OFF FROM SALT LAKE MUNICIPAL #2 TO THE S AND REQUESTED TO TRANSIT SALT LAKE CLASS B TO THE N TO LOGAN. WAS TOLD TO SQUAWK DISCRETE CODE AND TURN E TO PICK UP HIGHWAY; THEN HEAD N ALONG HIGHWAY. HANDED OFF TO SECOND CTLR. CTLR ADVISED TO MAINTAIN AT OR BELOW 8500. AFTER PASSING ABEAM SALT LAKE INTERNATIONAL WE TURNED TOWARD NW TO PASS W OF HILL AFB. CTLR ASKED FOR HEADING THEN SAID HE HAD TOLD US TO STAY E OF HILL AFB. WE TURNED TO PASS E OF HILL AFB THEN EXITED THE CLASS B AIRSPACE. TWO THINGS CONTRIBUTED TO THIS EVENT. THE FIRST WAS THAT I WAS CHECKING OUT A PLT IN HIS NEWLY ACQUIRED MOONEY AND THE RADIO INTERCOM HAD A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF STATIC. I SIMPLY DID NOT HEAR THE INSTRUCTION TO STAY E OF HILL AFB. THE SECOND ITEM WAS THAT AFTER THE CTLR ADVISED US TO RESUME NORMAL NAVIGATION WE TURNED NW TO FOLLOW THE SHORELINE W OF HILL AFB SINCE THE PERSONNEL AT THE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT INDICATED THAT THIS WAS A GOOD WAY TO REMAIN CLR OF THE AIRSPACE AT HILL AFB. IN RETROSPECT; IT WAS NOT A GOOD IDEA TO TAKE THE STUDENT INTO SUCH BUSY AIRSPACE WHEN THE RADIO INTERCOM COMBINATION WAS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY AND WAS FULL OF STATIC. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS THAT WE HAD BRIEFED OUR FLT ROUTE ON THE GND BEFORE TKOF AND WERE EXPECTING TO FLY W OF HILL AFB.
