A C182 PLT RPT ON THE UNAVAILABILITY OF VFR SVCS TO VFR ACFT NEAR LAS. PLT WAS UNABLE TO OBTAIN A CLRNC INTO THE CLASS B.

Narrative

FLYING FROM MEV-LAS AT 9500 FT; I WAS BEING ADVISED BY NELLIS APCH ON V150 BTY-HIDEN-LAS. I WAS TURNED OVER TO LAS APCH N OF HIDEN INTXN. UNABLE TO CONTACT LAS APCH (125.9); RETURNED TO NELLIS TO ASK WHETHER OR NOT THEY COULD ARRANGE A CLASS B ENTRY WITH LAS APCH. THEY SAID 'NO' BUT GAVE ME ANOTHER FREQ FOR LAS. NO CONTACT. I REMAINED CLR OF CLASS B AND CIRCLED CCW TO V394 AREA AND TRIED AGAIN. AFTER MANY ATTEMPTS; I RECEIVED THE OLD 'STANDBY!' CESSNA CALL. AFTER 15 OR 20 MINS OF STANDBY WITH A FEW MORE CALLS TO LAS APCH; I GAVE UP. BY THIS TIME I HAD DSNDED TO 8500 FT WBOUND FROM A POINT BTWN V394 AND HIDEN. AS I WAS FLOUNDERING; TRYING TO FIGURE A PLAN 'B;' I HAD GONE WBOUND AND THE VOR WAS BEGINNING TO WANDER ON THE LAS 116.9 SIGNAL. I SWITCHED TO DAG 113.2 AND COULDN'T GET A GOOD SIGNAL. I TRIED THE FLYBUDDIES GPS AND IT STARTED ACTING UP. I COULDN'T GET IT TO SELECT THE PROPER LETTERS FOR THE IDENTS; IE; I COULD GET THE 'D' FOR DAGGETT BUT NOT THE 'A' OR 'G.' I NOW COULDN'T RETUNE LAS GETTING THE 'L' BUT NOT THE 'A' OR 'S.' THEN MY 3 YR OLD STARTED THROWING UP IN THE BACK SEAT. DURING THAT TIME I MIGHT HAVE ENCROACHED ON RESTR AREAS 2502 N OR E. I DON'T THINK I WAS THAT FAR E AT THE TIME BUT IT MAY HAVE HAPPENED. I FOUND OUT LATER THAT THE GPS IN THIS ACFT HAS A HISTORY OF THE SAME SYMPTOMS. IT HAS BEEN BACK TO THE FACTORY A FEW TIMES. THE FLT WAS GOING TO BE A SIMPLE XCOUNTRY TO LAS. I SAW NO REASON NOT TO BE ABLE TO GET IN. CLR AND A MILLION. I NEEDED PLAN B.
