FLC OF DC9-50 DEPARTS DTW WITH AN OPEN ITEM IN THE ACFT'S LOGBOOK RELATIVE TO HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION. THE ITEM HAD NOT BEEN SIGNED OFF BY ACR MAINT PERSONNEL.
Narrative
ACFT ARRIVED LATE AND THIS CREW WAS HURRYING TO PREPARE FOR A TIMELY DEP. THE INCOMING CAPT HAD SAID TO THIS AUTHOR THAT HE FELT THAT THE L ENG WAS CONSUMING ENG OIL; AND HAD DROPPED 2 QUARTS ON A 1 HR 15 MIN LEG (SYR-DTW). HE SAID THAT THERE WERE NO OIL SPOTS INDICATING TO MYSELF THAT IT WAS A CONSUMPTION PROB. AFTER REVIEWING THE ACFT LOGBOOK; I FELT THIS WAS AN INFO ACFT NOTE. AT LEVEL OFF; I REVIEWED THIS LOGBOOK AGAIN AND THOUGHT THAT THIS MIGHT BE VIEWED AS A WRITE-UP RATHER THAN AN INFORMATIONAL ITEM. A WRITE-UP WOULD HAVE REQUIRED A MECH'S SIGN-OFF. I BELIEVE THAT INFORMATIONAL DATA WOULD NOT. THE OIL QUANTITY IN THE L ENG WAS IN NORMAL LIMITS AND REMAINED NORMAL WITH 1 QUART OF OIL USE IN THE 3 HR FLT. DTW- (JFK)-PHL FLT DIVERSION. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 399865: I ASSUMED MAINT WOULD NOTE THE WRITE-UP AND MAKE SOME SORT OF A SIGN-OFF. AT THAT POINT I'M AFRAID I FORGOT ABOUT IT. I MESSED UP BECAUSE I DIDN'T BACK UP THE CAPT TO MAKE SURE THIS DISCREPANCY HAD BEEN ATTENDED TO BY MAINT PRIOR TO FLT.
