A C172RG LANDS GEAR UP DURING A SIMULATED ENG OUT MANEUVER AT HYI; TX.

Narrative

PRIOR TO THIS EVENT; I HAD NOT FLOWN FOR 8 MONTHS. I SCHEDULED WITH MY INSTRUCTOR TO GO UP AND WORK ON MY BFR SKILLS. HE SUGGESTED THAT WE TAKE A COMPLEX C172 WITH RETRACTABLE GEAR SO THAT WE COULD ALSO WORK TOWARD MY COMPLEX ACFT SIGNOFF AND LEARN RETRACTABLE GEAR. (I HAD NEVER FLOWN A RETRACTABLE GEAR AIRPLANE.) THE DAY ARRIVED AND AFTER TAKING OFF; WE FLEW MANY MANEUVERS BEFORE HE GAVE ME A SIMULATED ENG OUT LNDG; OFF FIELD. ON THE DSCNT I WENT THROUGH THE EMER PROCS BUT TOTALLY FORGOT TO EXTEND THE LNDG GEAR. AS WE NEARED THE GND; MY INSTRUCTOR; WHO HAD NOTICED THE ERROR; WAITED TO SEE IF I WOULD CORRECT THE OMISSION. WHEN I DID NOT HE CALLED 'MY AIRPLANE;' TOOK OVER THE CTLS; AND MUCH TO MY SHOCK AND EMBARRASSMENT; LOWERED THE GEAR. EVEN WITH THE WARNING HORN SOUNDING; I HAD NOT NOTICED. WE CONTINUED TRAINING AND I MADE 2 LNDGS AT A NEARBY ARPT REMEMBERING TO PUT THE GEAR DOWN. WHILE ON DOWNWIND FOR THE THIRD LNDG; MY INSTRUCTOR GAVE ME ANOTHER SIMULATED ENG OUT LNDG. MAKING IT TO THE APCH END OFF THE RWY WAS SOMEWHAT IN QUESTION. I WENT THROUGH EMER PROCS AND FLEW THE PLANE TO THE RWY PROFICIENTLY; WHERE I PROMPTLY LANDED WITHOUT LNDG GEAR. THE TOUCHDOWN WAS SOFT AND WE SKIDDED UNEVENTFULLY TO A STOP. MINOR DAMAGE TO THE SKIN OF THE ACFT WAS THE RESULT. WE WERE BOTH IN DISBELIEF THAT WE HAD LANDED WITHOUT THE LNDG GEAR DESPITE THE WARNING HORN. OF COURSE THE HORN HAD BEEN SOUNDING FROM THE MOMENT OF PWR REDUCTION AND WE HAD BOTH BEEN DISTR WITH THE SIMULATED EMER.
