EXPERIMENTAL ACFT MAKES FORCED LNDG IN 1H0 AIRSPACE.
Narrative
THIS WAS MY 4TH SOLO FLT SINCE COMPLETING MY CHKOUT IN OUR EXPERIMENTAL ACFT. THE PREFLT INSPECTION; DONE ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER'S CHKLIST; WAS NORMAL; AND THE ENG HAD BEEN RUNNING WELL EACH FLT SINCE ACQUISITION. WE FUELED THE AIRPLANE; AND I ADDED THE OIL TO THE TANKS BEFORE FUELING; ADDED THE GAS; AND GENTLY SHOOK THE WINGS TO MIX THE FUEL AND OIL WELL. (ENG IS A 2 STROKE 65 HP ROTAX 532.) WE THEN WENT INSIDE APPROX 10 MINS; SO THE OIL SHOULD HAVE BEEN WELL DISPERSED. WE GOT IN THE AIRPLANE; APPLIED SEAT BELTS. ENG START; TAXI; RUN-UP AND WATER TEMP WERE ALL NORMAL; TKOF WAS NORMAL. WE FLEW AROUND THE ARPT APPROX 10 MINS. BOTH EGT'S WERE NORMAL; AND I FLEW TO MY PRACTICE AREA. I THEN NOTICED A LIGHT SPRAY OF SOME KIND ON MY LEG; WHICH HAD NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. WE ALSO HAD A NEW WATER TEMP GAUGE. THIS WAS ITS FIRST FLIGHT; IT INDICATED 235 DEGS. AS WE REACHED THE FIELDS (APPROX 2-4 MI FROM THE ARPT); I LOST PWR FROM 6000 RPM TO 3800-4000 RPM; THE ENG WAS RUNNING ROUGH AND MY L EGT INDICATED ZERO (BOTH HAD INDICATED 1000 DEGS UNTIL THEN; THEIR USUAL READING). I WAS NOT SURE HOW LONG IT WOULD BE UNTIL COMPLETE ENG FAILURE WOULD OCCUR; OR IF I COULD MAKE THE ARPT WITH ENOUGH ALT TO MANEUVER FOR LNDG. I SPIRALED DOWN AND LANDED IN THE LARGE FIELD BELOW ME. LANDED WITH NO DAMAGE TO THE AIRPLANE AND MINIMAL CROP DAMAGE. NEITHER MY FATHER NOR I WERE INJURED. WE CONTACTED THE LANDOWNER AND RPTED THE LNDG.
