PLT OF BELLANCA 14-13-3 DOES NOT USE CHKLIST DURING RUN- UP AND NEGLECTS TO SWITCH TO A WING TANK PRIOR TO TKOF. FUEL STARVATION OCCURS AND LNDG MADE ON THE RWY.

Narrative

I WAS AT THE FLY-IN AT AWO. I WAS DEPARTING LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON. I HAD CAMPED AT THE FLY-IN FOR 2 DAYS AND SLEPT POORLY. I WAS TIRED AND HAD DRANK NO WATER THAT AFTERNOON. I HAD FLOWN THE EVENING BEFORE AND HAD BEEN DISTRACTED FROM CHANGING FROM MY AUX FUEL TANK TO A MAIN WING TANK IN THE TFC PATTERN PRIOR TO LNDG BY HVY TFC. I PREFLTED PRIOR TO DEP AND CHKED FUEL IN THE WING TANKS BUT COULD NOT VISUALLY CHK THE AUX TANK. I WAS #5 IN A FLT OF 5. I HAD TROUBLE WITH MY BATTERY ON START AND HAD TO UNSTRAP AND PULL THE PROP THROUGH TO START THE ENG. I REACHED THE RUN-UP AREA AND DID MY RUN-UP WITHOUT MY CHKLIST AND MISSED SELECTING FUEL TO A WING TANK (I WAS RUSHED BECAUSE THE LAST PLANE IN THE FLT WAS WAITING FOR ME). I USUALLY DO A CONFIGN CHK PRIOR TO TKOF (TRIM; MAGNETOS; CARB HEAT; FLAPS AND FUEL). I GOT TO FLAPS AND STOPPED; THE RWY DIRECTOR WAS DIRECTING ME AT THAT TIME. I TOOK OFF ON THE AUX TANK. I RAN OUT OF FUEL AT 300 FT AFTER I HAD RETRACTED THE GEAR AND FLAPS. I SWITCHED TO A WING TANK AND STARTED PUMPING THE WOBBLE FUEL PUMP BUT THE ENG DIDN'T PICK UP. I SELECTED THE LNDG GEAR DOWN BUT THEY DIDN'T GET DOWN PRIOR TO ME LNDG ON THE RWY. GEAR IN TRANSIT; ENG STOPPAGE AND CURLED PROP; NO INJURIES. THE FAA INSPECTORS ON THE SCENE CLASSIFIED IT AN INCIDENT. LESSON: 1) NEVER RUN ANY FUEL TANK BELOW 1/4. 2) AT UNUSUAL EVENTS DOUBLE CHK YOURSELF. 3) TAKE ALL THE TIME YOU NEED; USE YOUR CHKLIST AND DON'T OMIT YOUR USUAL PROC. 4) ENSURE YOU ARE PHYSICALLY FIT; DRINK WATER.
