Narrative

I WAS THE LEADER OF A FLT OF 2 PIPERS (CHEROKEE PA32 AND LANCE PA32R). THE #2 ACFT; ACFT Y; HAD AN ALTERNATOR FAILURE AND WAS FOLLOWING ME IN ACFT X. (OUR CALL SIGN WAS XX.) HE WAS LISTENING TO ME ON 128.95 AND I WAS RELAYING ATC INSTRUCTIONS FOR HIM. I CONTACTED RDU ATC 38 NM OUT. THEY TURNED US TO A 060 DEG HDG FOR THE DOWNWIND LEG FOR RWY 23R. WHEN WE WERE 11 NM OUT; THE CTLR SWITCHED ME TO 124.80. AT THAT POINT; I WANTED TO LET MY WING MAN AHEAD BECAUSE HE WAS ON BATTERY PWR ONLY. I CALLED ACROSS; WHAT I THOUGHT WAS ATC; THAT I WAS GOING TO BREAK HIGH L TO LET MY WING MAN AHEAD. AT THAT POINT I BROKE AND MY WING MAN CONTACTED TWR ON 127.45. I DID NOT KNOW THIS; AND ATC GOT CONFUSED OVER WHAT WAS HAPPENING. HE WAS USING ANOTHER CALL SIGN. HE LANDED RWY 23R AND I LANDED RWY 23L. AFTER LNDG ATC REQUESTED THAT WE CALL THEM ONCE IN THE OFFICE. THIS WAS ONLY THE SECOND TIME I HAVE DONE A FLT OF 2 AND THE FIRST TIME I WAS LEAD. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME FOR MY WING MAN. I MIGHT HAVE ACCIDENTALLY BROADCASTED MY INTENTIONS ON THE WRONG FREQ. I AM NOT SURE; THINGS WERE HAPPENING FAST. IT COMES DOWN TO ATC DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING AND CONFUSION SET IN.
