DC9 CREW DID NOT OBSERVE STERILE COCKPIT RULE. JUMP SEAT RIDER AND CABIN ATTENDANT DISTRACTED CAPT CAUSING A RWY INCURSION.

Narrative

SATURDAY MORNING; I WAS FLYING FLT #XXX; OKC TO IAH ON JUL/SAT/98. I WAS CLRED TO RWY 17R FOR MY TKOF RWY. AS I TURNED L OUT FROM MY PUSHBACK SPOT I MADE A L TURN AND TAXIED TO TXWY C7; THEN MADE A R TURN ONTO TXWY C. JUST BEFORE I ARRIVED AT TXWY A (WHICH IS PART OF THE RAMP) I WAS DISTRACTED BY A FLT ATTENDANT SAYING SOMETHING TO MY FO AND MY JUMP SEAT RIDER. I MISSED MY TURN ONTO TXWY A. I STAYED ON TXWY C WHICH CROSSED RWY 17R. AS I APCHED RWY 17R I CHKED FINAL FOR LNDG ACFT AS WELL AS THE TKOF END OF RWY 17R TO MAKE SURE NO ONE WAS GOING TO TKOF. AS I CROSSED RWY 17R GND ASKED ME WHERE WAS I GOING. IF YOU WANT TO USE RWY 13 THAT'S OK. MY FO TOLD HIM WE WANTED TO USE RWY 17R. GND SAID TO TURN R AT THE NEXT INTXN (TXWY L) AND TAXI ACROSS RWY 17R TO TXWY A AND TURN L. WE DID THAT WITH NO FURTHER PROBS. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR: FLT ATTENDANT ENTERING THE COCKPIT WHILE WE WERE TAXIING FOR TKOF. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 409593: SEVERAL FACTORS WERE PRESENT WHICH I FEEL WERE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS EVENT; MOST OF THEM CREW-RELATED: 1) IN MY VIEW AS FO; A SEEMINGLY 'COLD' WORKING ATMOSPHERE OR POSSIBLY A SLIGHTLY CONDESCENDING TONE SET BY THE CAPT. 2) PRESSURE TO KEEP SCHEDULE DUE TO LATE ARR OF OUR ACFT AND RESULTING URGE TO RUSH DUTIES. 3) UNUSUAL USE OF RWY 17R. CAPT HAD PREVIOUSLY STATED THAT HE HAD ALWAYS USED RWY 17L RATHER THAN RWY 17R; WHEN DEPARTING S AT OKC; THEREFORE; UNFAMILIARITY WITH TAXI RTE. 4) TAXI CLRNC FROM GND CTL DID NOT CONTAIN INSTRUCTIONS TO FOLLOW A SPECIFIC RTE TO RWY 17R. 5) DISTRACTIONS IN THE COCKPIT DURING TAXI IN THE FORM OF: A) COCKPIT DOOR BEING LEFT OPEN FOR VENTILATION DURING TAXI. B) AN UNUSUALLY LARGE NUMBER OF REQUESTS TO ACCOMMODATE PAX SPECIAL NEEDS FOR ARR; WITH CHANGES TO THOSE REQUESTS BEING GIVEN TO US BY THE FIRST FLT ATTENDANT DURING TAXI. C) FIRST FLT ATTENDANT PRESENTING BOTH PLTS PREVIOUSLY REQUESTED DRINK CUPS; RIGHT AT THE TIME WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MAKING THE CORRECT TURN ONTO THE NEXT TXWY. D) MY (FO) CONCENTRATION ON RUNNING THE TAXI CHKLIST; WITH PERHAPS INSUFFICIENT BACKUP OF CAPT'S ACTIONS AS HE TAXIED THE ACFT.
