PVT PLT OF A C206 TAXIED BACK TO PARKING ACROSS A RWY WITHOUT TWR CLRNC SINCE HE HAD LOST ALL ELECTRICAL PWR UPON ARR AT TAXIED OUT CLRNC. TWR ADVISED HIM AFTER THE FACT THAT HE SHOULD HAVE FACED THE TWR AND SHOWN A LNDG LIGHT IN NOTIFYING THE TWR OF HIS LOST COM CONDITION.

Narrative

I WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 2 BY GND. AS I TAXIED ACROSS RWY 14/22; I HAD A TOTAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE. I STOPPED ON THE TXWY ON THE OTHER SIDE FOR APPROX 1 MIN. I LOOKED BEHIND AND DIDN'T SEE ANY TFC COMING. I TAXIED BACK TO PARKING. WHILE TAXIING BACK; I STOPPED AND PULLED OVER ON THE JETWAY TO LET A COMMERCIAL JET AND A PROP PLANE GET BY. UPON GETTING THE PLANE TO THE MAINT HANGAR; I CALLED THE TWR. THEY TOLD ME THAT IT HAS BEEN POLICY FOR OVER 30 YRS TO TURN THE PLANE TOWARD THE TWR AND FLASH THE LNDG LIGHTS UNTIL YOU WERE GIVEN A GREEN LIGHT TO TAXI BACK. AFTER THINKING IT OVER; I CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT IT WAS HARD TO FLASH YOUR LIGHTS WHEN THERE WAS TOTAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE. I FELT THAT AT THIS PARTICULAR ARPT (WITH NOT A LOT OF COMMERCIAL TFC) I WAS BEING VERY SAFE IN BACK-TAXIING TO PARKING. THE MECH FOUND THAT THE STARTER HAD STUCK ENGAGED AND WHILE TAXIING; HEATED UP THE BATTERY AND SHORTED IT OUT. MY C206 HAS 1650TT WITH A NEW REBUILT ENG IN IT. IT WAS REPLACED AT 1645TT. I GUESS IN MY MIND I WAS TRYING TO CLR THE TXWY AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE SO AS NOT TO CAUSE ANY DELAY IN ANYONE ELSE. I ALSO FELT THAT I WAS DOING THE SAFEST THING FOR MYSELF AND THE OTHER PLTS. I FEEL THAT THE MORE TIME AND EXPERIENCE A PLT HAS THE BETTER HE PERFORMS IN THESE SITS. I TRY TO DO EVERYTHING BY THE BOOK; BUT WITH THE BOOK GETTING BIGGER AND BIGGER; IT IS HARD TO MEMORIZE EVERYTHING.
