FLC IN ACFT X WERE TAXIING TO THE RWY AT CLE ARPT. ALSO TAXIING OUT WAS ACFT Y. APPARENTLY TO EXPEDITE TFC; THE GND CTLR WANTED ACFT Y TO PROCEED AHEAD OF ACFT X BUT GOT THE CALL SIGN MIXED UP AND NEITHER ACFT GAVE WAY.

Narrative

I WAS ACTING AS FO ON A BEECH 1900D WHILE TAXIING AT THE CLE ARPT. IT WAS NIGHTTIME AND WE WERE ESTABLISHED ON TXWY K ENRTE TO RWY 23R FOR DEP. WHILE TAXIING; GND CTL ISSUED A HOLD CLRNC TO AN ACFT TO HOLD FOR AN MD80 EXITING THE GATE/RAMP AREA WHICH WAS GOING TO JOIN THE TXWY; WHICH WE WERE OCCUPYING. THE HOLD INSTRUCTION GIVEN BY THE CTLR WAS INTENDED FOR US; BUT THE CTLR ISSUED THE INSTRUCTION TO AN ACFT WHICH WAS NOT OUR CALL SIGN; THEREFORE; WE DID NOT RESPOND TO THE HOLD CLRNC TO LET THE MD80 PASS. THE ACFT Y MD80 EXPECTED US TO HOLD FOR HIM AND WAS TAXIING AT A VERY HIGH RATE OF SPD TO GET IN FRONT OF US. THE MD80 WAS COMING FROM BEHIND US AT A VERY HIGH RATE OF SPD AND WE DIDN'T SEE IT UNTIL IT WAS ABOUT 35 FT FROM OUR ACFT AND TO OUR R. AT WHICH; THE MD80 AND OUR ACFT SUDDENLY BOTH CAME TO A STOP. THE CTLR THEN SAID WE WERE EXPECTED TO HOLD FOR THE MD80 BUT THAT WE DIDN'T ACKNOWLEDGE. BECAUSE THE CTLR USED THE INCORRECT CALL SIGN; WE DID NOT KNOW THE HOLD CLRNC WAS FOR US. AFTER A FEW MOMENTS; THE CAPT OF THE ACFT Y MD80 SAID A RUDE COMMENT TO US OVER THE FREQ; WHEN HE MANEUVERED HIS ACFT IN FRONT OF OURS AND CONTINUED TO TAXI. WE THEN FOLLOWED AND THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT CONTINUED NORMALLY. NO DAMAGE OR INJURIES OCCURRED ON EITHER ACFT.
