PLT OF AN AERO COMMANDER 200 (AC20) LOST CTL OF THE ACFT DURING ENG START WHEN THE ENG STARTED WITH FULL PWR AND TRAVELED ACROSS A TXWY AND A PARALLEL RWY BEFORE THE PLT COULD REGAIN CTL BY PULLING BACK THE THROTTLE AND MIXTURE CTL.

Narrative

ON OCT/XA/98 AT NEARLY XX00; I PREPARED FOR A SHORT FLT IN N-NUMBER WHICH IS A 285 HP 4 PLACE RETRACTABLE GEAR AERO COMMANDER SINGLE ENG ACFT IN WHICH I HAVE LOGGED OVER 1000 HRS SINCE ITS PURCHASE. AT THE TIME; TFC WAS USING RWY 25 AT SBA ARPT. THE PLANE WAS POISED OUTSIDE HANGAR XX NEAR THE S END OF RWY 15. THE ACFT WAS POINTED APPROX 290 DEGS. PRIOR TO START; NO RADIO CONTACT WITH THE CTL TWR HAD BEEN MADE. THE WX WAS CLR. ENG START WAS SEEMINGLY ROUTINE. HOWEVER; THIS TIME THE THROTTLE WAS SET INADVERTENTLY AT NEAR FULL. TO MY COMPLETE SURPRISE THE ENG CAUGHT AT NEARLY MAX PWR AND BEFORE I COULD RESPOND; THE ACFT HAD CROSSED THE TXWY AND RWY 15L. I PULLED THE THROTTLE BACK AND PULLED THE MIXTURE CTL BACK FROM FULL RICH AND THE ACFT CAME TO A HALT BEFORE RWY 15R. THE ACFT NOW WAS UNDER MY FULL CTL. A TOW TRUCK THEN PUSHED THE ACFT BACK TO THE HANGAR. NO DAMAGE WAS DONE TO ARPT PROPERTY; MY ACFT OR ANY OTHER ACFT. I HAVE BEEN FLYING FOR 30 YRS AND NEVER EXPERIENCED ANY INCIDENT SIMILAR TO THIS. FROM THIS EXPERIENCE; I HAVE LEARNED THAT A PREFLT OR ENG START MUST INCLUDE A CONSCIOUS CALLOUT OF 'PWR OFF' AS WELL AS 'MIXTURE FULL RICH;' SIMILAR TO THE CALLOUT OF GUMP USED PRIOR TO LNDG.
