A SHORTS SD330 IN CRUISE AT 8000 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO #2 ENG FAILURE. CAUSE UNKNOWN.

Narrative

ON OCT/XA/98 AT XA50Z; I DEPARTED CEDAR RAPIDS; IA; ENRTE TO SPENCER; IA. THE FO WAS THE PF. WE DEPARTED WITH 2.5 HRS WORTH OF FUEL FOR 1 HR FLT. CURRENT AND FORECAST WX WAS FOR CLR SKIES AND UNLIMITED VISIBILITY. WE LEVELED THE AIRPLANE OFF AT 8000 FT; SET CRUISE PWR; AND COMPLETED OUR CRUISE CHKS. ABOUT 5 MINS AFTER LEVELING OFF; THE R ENG COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN; WITH EVERYTHING SET UP FOR NORMAL FLT. THE R LP LEVER WAS FULLY OPEN; THE FUEL CONDITION LEVERS WERE FULLY FORWARD; BOOST PUMPS ON; XFEED VALVE SHUT; PLENTY OF FUEL; NO CLOUDS IN THE SKY SO NEGATIVE ICING CONDITIONS; OUTSIDE AIR TEMP ABOVE FREEZING; AND VERY SMOOTH AIR (TURB NO FACTOR). AFTER IT SPUN DOWN; THE COPLT AND I PERFORMED THE VITAL ACTIONS CHKLIST TO SECURE THE ENG. WE WERE TOLD TO CONTACT CID APCH AFTER INFORMING WATERLOO APCH OF OUR REQUEST TO RETURN TO CEDAR RAPIDS SINGLE ENG. AFTER PERFORMING ALL THE CHKLISTS; WE FINALLY LANDED AT CEDAR RAPIDS SINGLE ENG. NO RESTART WAS ATTEMPTED BECAUSE WE WERE WITHIN 30 MI FROM OUR DEP ARPT FOR A STRAIGHT-IN LNDG; AND MAINLY BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW IF THE R ENG WAS DUMPING OIL OR NOT. NO UNUSUAL SOUNDS WERE HEARD WHEN THE ENG QUIT.
