BE58 PLT TAXIED ONTO A RWY OCCUPIED BY A LNDG C208.

Narrative

AFTER STATING MY LOCATION; THAT I HAD THE ATIS; REQUESTING AND RECEIVING MY CLRNC (IFR); I WAS APCHING THE W SIDE HOLDING LINE OF TXWY A XING RWY 18/36. THE CTLR HAD NOT FORMALLY GIVEN ME A TAXI CLRNC AND I SPECIFICALLY QUESTIONED HIM REGARDING MY CLRNC TO CROSS THE ACTIVE RWY 18. I DO NOT REMEMBER WHETHER I ASKED 'AM I CLRED TO TAXI 18?' OR 'AM I CLRED TO CROSS 18?' IN ANY EVENT; I RECEIVED A CLRNC TO EITHER 'CROSS' OR 'TAXI' RWY 18. AFTER XING RWY 18; FROM GND RADIO COMMENTS BY THE CTLR; I REALIZED THAT A CARAVAN HAD JUST LANDED ON RWY 36 AND WE HAD COME WITHIN 1000 FT OR SO OF EACH OTHER WHILE ON THE RWY. I THEN HEARD THE CTLR ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE INCIDENT WHILE TALKING TO THE CARAVAN. PART OF THE PROB WAS MY DISTRACTING THE CTLR WITH SOCIAL CHATTER WHILE RECEIVING MY CLRNC. THE OTHER PART OF THE PROB WAS THAT WHILE I MEANT TO ASK 'AM I CLRED TO CROSS RWY 18?' I MAY HAVE ONLY ASKED 'AM I CLRED TO TAXI RWY 18?' WHICH WOULD NOT HAVE CLRED TO CROSS RWY 18; THE ACTIVE RWY. I BELIEVED I HAD AN EXPLICIT CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 18. LASTLY; WHILE RWY 18 WAS IN USE; IN THE FUTURE I WILL DO A BETTER JOB OF CHKING THE NON APCH END OF THE RWY IN ADDITION TO THE APCH END. MY HANGAR IS LOCATED ON THE W TEES OF ARPT TVC; IN THE NW QUADRANT OF RWYS 18/36 AND 10/28. I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY 'HOLD SHORT' INSTRUCTIONS; WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN UNAMBIGUOUS.
