Narrative
DEPARTED ANKENY ARPT (IKV); IA; APPROX XX15. CLBING TO AN ALT OF 17500 FT MSL; IKV DIRECT ALT TO LAND AT CLAYTON COUNTY TARA ARPT; ATLANTA; GA. MADE THE COMMENT TO THE PERSON SITTING IN THE R SEAT (WHO ALSO IS A PLT) WE SHOULD HAVE A NICE FLT WITH 60 KT TAILWIND; AND THE ONLY THING TO WATCH FOR IS A RESTR AREA AT FORT CAMPBELL; CLARKSVILLE; TN. AS WE APCHED THE CKV THE GPS ALERTED ME THAT THE FORT CAMPBELL RESTR AREA WAS AHEAD. I PUT #1 VOR ON CKV ALONG WITH THE DME. THE PLAN WAS TO CROSS THE 0 DEG RADIAL OF CKV 4 MI N. THE RESTR AREA I WOULD BE CLOSE TO WOULD BE 3701A; WHICH TOPS OUT AT 5000 FT MSL. ALL THIS TIME THE GPS WAS SHOWING ME TO BE OUT OF THE OTHER RESTR AREAS; INCLUDING 3701A. IN RETROSPECT; I SHOULD HAVE CALLED FORT CAMPBELL APCH AND HAD THEM RADAR VECTOR ME AROUND THE AREAS (AS I DID ON THE RETURN TRIP). I HAVE BEEN FLYING PROFESSIONALLY AND PVTLY FOR OVER 40 YRS AND AM WELL AWARE OF RESTR AREAS. IF BY CHANCE I DID PENETRATE THE RESTR AREA IN QUESTION; WHOEVER IT MAY CONCERN HAS MY SINCERE APOLOGIES FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE I MAY HAVE CAUSED. IN SUMMARY: 1) I HAVE SINCE FLT-TESTED THE GPS (NORTHSTAR M-2B GPS/LORAN); THE DME (KING KN62) AND THE NAV (COLLIN 351) AND ALL ARE WELL WITHIN TOLERANCE. 2) I WILL CONTACT THE APPROPRIATE CTRS; APCH CTLRS OR FSS REGARDING ANY FUTURE RESTR AREAS. 3) AGAIN; MY APOLOGIES FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE I MAY HAVE CAUSED REGARDING THIS MATTER.
