Synopsis

A DC10-10 IN CRUISE AT FL310 DECLARED AN EMER AND SHUT DOWN #1 ENG DUE TO ENG OVERSPD AND LOSS OF ENG CTL.

Narrative

WHILE CRUISING AT FL310; THE #1 ENG INCREASED TO THE FOLLOWING SETTINGS 115.9% N1; 989 DEG C EGT; 102.1% N2 AND FUEL FLOW IN EXCESS OF 10000 LBS/HR. THE AUTOTHROTTLES WERE DISCONNECTED. THE #1 ENG THROTTLE WAS MOVED THROUGH ITS FULL RANGE AT TRAVEL; BUT THE ENG DID NOT RESPOND. THE #1 ENG WAS THEN SHUT DOWN BY USE OF THE FUEL LEVER. COMPANY DISPATCH AND SYS MAIN WAS CONTACTED AND KEPT INFORMED. IT WAS DECIDED THAT THE SAFEST COURSE OF ACTION WAS TO CONTINUE TO OUR DEST -- DENVER; CO. PRIORITY HANDLING WAS REQUESTED FROM ATC. THE FLT ATTENDANTS WERE KEPT INFORMED; BUT AN EVAC WAS NOT PREPARED. THEY WERE INFORMED TO BE READY TO PREPARE THE PAX FOR AN EVAC IF THE SIT WORSENED. EMER EQUIP WAS REQUESTED TO BE STANDING BY AT DEN. AN UNEVENTFUL 2 ENG APCH AND LNDG WAS MADE AT DEN ON RWY 16. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED WHEN THE ENG N1 WENT TO 115.9% THE THROTTLE WAS PULLED BACK WITH NO EFFECT; SO THE ENG WAS SHUT DOWN WITH THE FIREWALL SHUTOFF. THE RPTR SAID THE ENG WAS CHANGED AND SEVERAL MODULES WERE SENT TO THE MANUFACTURER FOR EXAMINATION. THE RPTR SAID MAINT HAS NOT DISCLOSED THE CAUSE OF THE OVERSPD. THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT IS NOW IN LONG TERM STORAGE.
