PLT OF AN SEL SMA ON IFR FLT PLAN DEP TURNED BEYOND ATC CLRNC HDG TO MORE QUICKLY GET ON FLT PLAN COURSE CAUSING ATC TO INTERVENE AND QUESTION WHY HE HAD OVERTURNED.
Narrative
I MAKE THIS TRIP AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH. IFR CLRNC ALWAYS SAME; INCLUDING 'ENTER CTLED AIRSPACE ON HDG OF 100 DEGS;' WHICH IS MY ON COURSE HDG. THIS TIME CLRNC SAME EXCEPT FOR '...ENTER CTLED AIRSPACE ON HDG OF 180 DEGS.' I WAS IN A HURRY TO GET TO FAMILY DINNER -- I WAS LATE. I COULD NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE DIFFERENT CLRNC. I 'NEEDED' TO GET 'ON HDG' QUICKLY. I FIGURED I WOULD GET THE HDG AS SOON AS I CALLED CTLR. I WAS CLRED 'AS FILED' ANYWAY. SO; I JUST CONTINUED MY TURN FROM THE W; THROUGH 180 DEGS TO 100 DEGS AS I CALLED IN. CTLR QUESTIONED MY HDG. I RESPONDED 'BUT I WAS CLRED AS FILED.' HE STATED I SHOULD HAVE TURNED TO 180 DEGS AND WAITED UNTIL I WAS GIVEN HDG CHANGE TO GET ON COURSE. I GUESS DEEP DOWN I KNEW THAT. BUT I WAS LATE AND IN A HURRY. ALSO; IT WAS A DIFFERENT HDG THAN THE USUAL CLRNC. I GUESS I RATIONALIZED TO MYSELF WHY I SHOULD INDEED GET ON COURSE ASAP BECAUSE OF MY HURRY. I SHOULD HAVE FOLLOWED THE CLRNC PROPERLY SINCE I DID NOT KNOW WHAT OTHER TFC WAS IN THE AREA THAT THE CTLR WAS WORKING. EVEN THOUGH IT WAS VMC; THE NOSE HIGH ATTITUDE FOR CLBOUT IS SUB-OPTIMAL FOR SEE AND AVOID PRACTICES.
