Synopsis

INSTRUCTOR PLT WITH TRAINEE MADE FORCED LNDG SOON AFTER TOUCH-AND-GO LNDG DUE THE ENG QUITTING BECAUSE OF FUEL STARVATION. CAUSE DUE TO FUEL MISMGMNT. THE ACFT WHEEL PANTS RECEIVED MINOR DAMAGE.

Narrative

THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED AT THE END OF A LESS THAN 2 HR FLT. WE HAD DONE SOME AIRWORK FOR APPROX 1 HR 30 MINS AND RETURNED TO THE ARPT OF DEP TO PRACTICE SOME TKOFS AND LNDGS. AFTER THE SECOND TOUCH-AND-GO THE ENG FAILED DURING THE TURN FROM UPWIND TO XWIND LEG AT APPROX 3400 FT AGL. I TOOK THE CTLS FROM THE LESS EXPERIENCED PLT AND LANDED THE ACFT IN A HARVESTED CORNFIELD SHORT OF THE RWY ON ARPT PROPERTY. THE ACFT SUSTAINED DAMAGE THAT WAS LIMITED TO THE WHEEL PANTS ON BOTH MAIN GEAR. THE ACFT WAS PULLED BY HAND FROM THE FIELD AND RETURNED TO THE ARPT PROPERTY. LATER INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE FUEL TANK THAT WE WERE OPERATING FROM HAD RUN DRY. THE OTHER TANK HAD ADEQUATE FUEL TO CONTINUE THE FLT. WE HAD BOTH AGREED TO OPERATE THE FLT IN THIS MANNER. FUEL USAGE WOULD BE: 30 MINS OUT OF THE R TANK; 1 HR OUT OF THE L TANK; AND SO ON. I DID NOT MAINTAIN ADEQUATE AWARENESS OF OUR TIME AND AS SUCH; RAN THE TANK DRY. THE GRUMMAN AA1-C HOLDS 11 GALLONS USABLE FUEL IN EACH TANK AND HAS A LYC 0-235 ENG.
