FLC OF A SUPER MD80 FAILED TO SHUT DOWN THE #2 ENG AFTER PARKING RESULTING IN THE ENG RUNNING FOR 7 HRS AND RUNNING OUT OF FUEL. IT WAS DISCOVERED AND RPTED BY A FUELER.
Narrative
WE LANDED AT THE BUF ARPT IN VFR CONDITIONS. RWY AND RAMP/TXWY BRAKING ACTION WERE POOR. WE ELECTED TO TAXI IN ON 2 ENGS. NORMAL PROC IS TO SHUT DOWN #2 ENG AFTER A 3 MIN COOL-DOWN. WE PARKED AT OUR GATE; THE CAPT SHUT DOWN #1 ENG AND WE EXECUTED THE PARKING CHKLIST AND THEN THE TERMINATING CHKLIST. THE CREW DEPLANED AND WE WENT TO OUR CREW HOTEL FOR THE NIGHT. WE HAD FAILED TO SHUT DOWN THE #2 ENG. IT RAN UNTIL THE TANK FUEL WAS EXHAUSTED AND THEN FLAMED OUT. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE WX CONDITIONS WHICH CAUSED A DEV FROM OUR NORMAL SINGLE ENG TAXI PROC; THEREBY SETTING UP A FAILURE TO CLOSE THE #2 FUEL LEVER AT THE GATE AND FAILURE OF EITHER PLT TO CONFIRM THE #2 FUEL LEVER WAS CLOSED WHEN EXECUTING THE PARKING CHKLIST. THE RUNNING ENG WAS DISCOVERED BY THE FUEL TRUCK DRIVER WHEN HE SHOWED UP IN THE MORNING. THE ENG HAD BEEN RUNNING FOR APPROX 7 HRS UNNOTICED BY ANYONE ON THE ARPT! ANY TIME CONDITIONS REQUIRE A DEV FROM OTHERWISE NORMAL PROCS; SPECIAL ATTN SHOULD BE PAID TO EXECUTION OF ALL CHKLISTS. CONFIRMATION OF COMPLETION OF CHKLIST ITEMS IS ESSENTIAL.
