THEREFORE; THE CTLR CLRED HIM FOR TKOF ON THE OTHER RWY SINCE THERE WOULD BE NO TFC CONFLICTION.

Narrative

IT WAS THE FIRST LEG OF THE DAY SO I WAS PF AND THE FO WAS HANDLING PNF DUTIES. AS WE TAXIED FROM THE RAMP FOR TKOF; MY NEW FO WAS ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE EFIS/FMS AND I WAS EXPLAINING THINGS ABOUT IT AS WE WERE TAXIING. DURING THE EXPLANATION (AND TAXIING) OUR TAXI CLRNC CHANGED AND THE FO READ BACK THE CLRNC; BUT I WAS APPARENTLY MORE CONCERNED ABOUT MAINTAINING MY TRAIN OF THOUGHT AND DIDN'T REALLY NOTICE. AS WE WERE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 5R; WE GOT CLRNC FROM THE TWR TO CROSS RWY 5R AND HOLD THE POS ON RWY 5L. WE WERE MOVING ONTO RWY 5R WHEN TWR ASKED IF WE WERE ON TXWY N; AND AT THE SAME TIME I REALIZED THERE WAS NO TXWY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF RWY 5R GOING TO RWY 5L WHERE WE WERE (AT THE END). THE FO IMMEDIATELY REPLIED 'NO' AND I TURNED TO TAXI UP THE RWY TO CLR AT TXWY N TO RWY 5L. BEFORE I GOT TO TXWY N; TWR ISSUED A TKOF CLRNC FOR US FROM RWY 5R AND WE CONTINUED THE TKOF ROLL WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. THE TFC ON FINAL FOR RWY 5R WAS 3 MI OUT AT THE TIME. THE INCURSION COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY GREATER PLT ATTN DURING THE TAXI PHASE. EVEN THOUGH THE FO'S QUESTIONS ABOUT THE EFIS/FMS SEEMED PERTINENT TO THE FLT AND I CONSIDERED IT APPROPRIATE CONVERSATION DURING A STERILE COCKPIT PHASE; A MORE APPROPRIATE ACTION WOULD HAVE BEEN TO GO TO A SPOT WHERE WE COULD STOP THE AIRPLANE; ANSWER ALL THE FO'S QUESTIONS; AND THEN RESUME TAXIING.
