INSTRUCTOR PLT OPERATOR AN SMA SEL ON A FLT TRAINING INTRODUCTION RIDE WHEN IT WAS OVERDUE FOR AN ANNUAL INSPECTION. THE OPERATOR ACFT INSPECTION STATUS BOARD DID NOT REFLECT THE ACTUAL ACFT LOGBOOK INSPECTION RECORD.

Narrative

I WORK AT A FLT SCHOOL IN WHICH WE CONDUCT FLT TRAINING AS WELL AS CERTIFIED FAR 135 TOURS. ON THE DATE OF JAN/XA/98; I COMPLETED AN INTRODUCTION FLT IN ONE OF OUR ACFT THAT IS OPERATED UNDER PART 91. TO KEEP TRACK OF ALL THE REQUIRED MAINT AND INSPECTIONS; WE HAVE A MAINT BOARD POSTED IN OUR OFFICE TO KEEP UPDATED ON OUR MANY ACFT. I HAVE COME TO RELY ON THIS INFO AS I OFTEN FLY 3-4 DIFFERENT ACFT A DAY. UNFORTUNATELY; DUE TO A MISUNDERSTANDING BTWN OFFICE PERSONNEL; AND A SERIES OF TERMINATIONS THAT RECENTLY TOOK PLACE; THE ANNUAL HAD BEEN POSTED WHEN YET ONLY A 100 HR HAD BEEN DONE. I REALIZE THAT IN NO WAY IS IT ANY OTHER PERSON'S RESPONSIBILITY OTHER THAN MINE; THE PIC; TO DETERMINE THE AIRWORTHINESS OF THE ACFT I FLY. THE ANNUAL WAS DUE DEC/XB/98 AND THE ACFT WAS IMMEDIATELY GNDED ON JAN/XC/99. I HAVE LEARNED THAT I MUST ASSURE MY ACFT IS AIRWORTHY BY THE ONLY LEGAL WAY -- IN THE ACFT LOGS -- AND WILL NOT RELY ON SECOND HAND INFO. WE HAVE ALSO MADE NEW POLICIES AT WORK TO ENSURE THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN.
