Synopsis

AN MD80 ABORTS ITS TKOF WHEN THE FLC RECEIVES INDICATIONS OF A COMPRESSOR STALL AT 138 KTS. ACFT HAD BEEN DEICED PRIOR TO TKOF ON THE SNOW COVERED RWY.

Narrative

ON TAXI OUT FOR TKOF; ALL SYS NORMAL AND OPERATING. TEMP WAS -5 DEGS C. A DECISION WAS MADE TO RECEIVE DEICE SVCING IN THE RUN-UP AREA OF RWY 15R. E-TIPS (WING HEATER BLANKET) WAS INSTALLED AND ACTIVE ON THIS ACFT. OUT OF GATE AT XY54; DEICE ENDED AT YY27. SNOW HAD BEEN INTERMITTENT; THUS IT WAS THOUGHT PRUDENT TO DEICE IN ADDITION TO E-TIPS. POST DEICE; WING SURFACES WERE INSPECTED AND FOUND TO BE CLR OF ICE OR SNOW. RWY 15R CONDITIONS WERE RPTED AS: 1/2 INCH PACKED SNOW AND NO BRAKING ACTION RPTED. ENG ANTI-ICE WAS USED FOR TKOF. TKOF ROLL BEGAN AT APPROX YY24. ALL WAS NORMAL UNTIL APPROX 138 KTS (V1 WAS 144 KTS). AT THIS TIME THE ACFT JERKED HEAVILY AND LOUD POPPING WAS HEARD. THE L EPR GAUGE DROPPED TO 1.0 EPR AND IDLE PWR. THE AIRSPD WAS BELOW V1 AND IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO DECREASE. REJECTED TKOF WAS CALLED AND PERFORMED. DURING REVERSING; THE L ENG NEVER SPOOLED UP. ACFT STOPPED CTRLINE OF RWY 15R APPROX 1000 FT FROM RWY END. ALL APPROPRIATE CHKLISTS WERE COMPLETED AND THROUGH GOOD AND FREQUENT COMS WITH CABIN CREW; ALL WAS CALM AND SECURE IN CABIN. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO EITHER PAX OR CREW. EMER EQUIP REQUESTED; THOUGH NO EVAC PERFORMED. SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION OF ACFT BY MECHS REVEALED NO DAMAGE TO ACFT OR ENGS. SPECULATION HAS CTRED AROUND POSSIBLE RWY CONTAMINATION BY ICE; SNOW OR DEBRIS AS A CAUSATIVE FACTOR. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 425508: AT APPROX 135 KTS; MASTER CAUTION 'FLICKERED' FOLLOWED BY L ENG 'CHUG' AND THEN A LOUD 'POP.' IMMEDIATE LOSS OF PWR WAS FELT. ACFT VEERED SLIGHTLY R OF CTRLINE WITH 1 REVERSER AND POOR BRAKING. ACFT STEERED BACK ON CTRLINE. MAINT FOUND NO DAMAGE TO ENG AND SPECULATED COMPRESSOR STALL DUE TO POSSIBLE RWY CONTAMINATION FROM SNOW; ICE; OR FOD.
