AN ACR MD80 SUPER 80 FLC HAS FOD FROM ICING DAMAGING THE R ENG. THE FLT ACCEPTS A DIVERSION TO ALTERNATE WHERE THE ACFT IS GNDED.

Narrative

AFTER FOLLOWING ALL WINTER OP PROCS; WE DEPARTED PVD TO ORD. THERE WERE OVCST CONDITIONS AT PVD WITH 4 MI VISIBILITY; LIGHT SNOW; -12 DEGS C. SOON AFTER TKOF; WE RECEIVED A CALL FROM A FLT ATTENDANT NOTIFYING US ABOUT AN UNUSUAL ENG NOISE IN THE AFT CABIN AREA. INITIALLY; ENG INSTS APPEARED NORMAL. THEN WE NOTICED THE R FUEL FLOW INDICATOR BEGAN FLUCTUATING BTWN 10000 PPH TO 16000 PPH WITH CLB PWR SELECTED. BASED OFF THE CONCURRENT TIMING OF AN UNUSUAL ENG NOISE AND ERRATIC FUEL FLOW; I DECIDED TO LAND AT BOS FOR A PRECAUTIONARY MAINT CHK. THE R ENG WAS NOT SHUT DOWN; AS ALL OTHER ENG INDICATIONS APPEARED NORMAL. OUR CALCULATIONS PLANNED FOR LNDG AT BOS AT THE MAX GROSS LNDG WT OF 130000 LBS. ATC THEN EXPEDITED OUR ARR WHICH RESULTED IN LNDG OVERWT AT 131000 LBS. AN EMER WAS NOT DECLARED; ALTHOUGH TECHNICALLY ONE SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN WHEN I REALIZED ABOUT THE OVERWT LNDG CONDITION OF FINAL APCH. THE WORKLOAD WAS HIGH. WX WAS MARGINAL AT BOS; AND THE MOST ISSUE FOR ME WAS THAT THE ACFT WAS PREPARED FOR LNDG. MAINT MET THE ACFT AT THE GATE; AND SOON DETERMINED THE R ENG HAD FOD. ICE IS SUSPECTED AS SOURCE OF DAMAGE. ACFT WAS TAKEN OTS.
