DC10 CREW HAD MAIN LNDG GEAR UNSAFE INDICATIONS.

Narrative

ACR FLT #ABC NRT-GUM JAN/XA/99. UPON GEAR EXTENSION GUM; R MAIN LNDG GEAR ACTUATOR BROKE (A LOUD BANG). #3 HYD QUANTITY WAS LOST. WE HAD 2 RED UNSAFE INDICATION LIGHTS ON GEAR -- 1 AT FRONT PANEL; 1 AT SO PANEL. R GEAR VIEWING PORT WAS INOP DUE TO HYD FLUID. EMER DECLARED. DID A FLY-BY TO HAVE TWR VERIFY GEAR POS. TOLD FLT ATTENDANTS THIS WAS AN EMER AND TO PREPARE PAX FOR POSSIBLE GEAR PROB AND EVAC WITH EMER EQUIP STANDING BY. WE PERFORMED A SAFE AND UNEVENTFUL LNDG. WE CLRED THE ACTIVE RWY (RWY 6L) AND HAD OUR ACR TOW US TO OUR GATE (PINS INSTALLED). WE HAD 32000 LBS OF FUEL WHEN THE GEAR PROB OCCURRED. WE FLEW APPROX 30 MINS IN TFC PATTERN (VFR) WHILE PERFORMING CHKLISTS AND TRYING TO REACH OUR ACR MAINT ON BOTH HF AND VHF RADIOS. A SATCOM RADIO WOULD HAVE BEEN USEFUL; AS WE WERE UNABLE TO REACH MAINT. OUR GOALS WERE TO MAKE SURE ALL EMER CHKLISTS WERE COMPLETED; TO REACH MAINT; AND TO PREPARE CABIN FOR POSSIBLE GEAR COLLAPSE; AND TO LAND WITH NO LESS THAN 10000 LBS OF FUEL. MY CREW DID AN OUTSTANDING JOB! THE LNDG WAS SAFE; UNEVENTFUL AND WITH NO DAMAGE OR INJURIES.
