PLT OF C150 EXPERIENCES ENG FAILURE NEAR AUSTIN.

Narrative

THIS FLT WAS A DIRECT RTE FROM LAKEWAY AIRPARK NEAR AUSTIN; TX; TO HONDO MUNICIPAL ARPT; A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 90 MI. AFTER TOPPING OFF FUEL AND OTHER USUAL PREPARATIONS; WE TOOK OFF AT XA15 AND CLBED TO 4500 FT ON COURSE. ABOUT 35 MINS LATER; THE ENG SUDDENLY SPUTTERED. I APPLIED CARB HEAT; BUT RPM KEPT DETERIORATING UNTIL ALL PWR WAS LOST. THE ENG WINDMILLED BUT WOULD NOT RESTART. I CALLED BULVERDE ARPT ON UNICOM -- NO ANSWER. I BROADCAST ON 121.5 -- NO RESPONSE. APPROX 5 MI TO MY R WAS THE MIL AUX FIELD AT CAMP BULLIS; TX. WE GLIDED TO THIS MIL FIELD AND LANDED ON THE RWY THERE. THE ACFT WAS NOT DAMAGED AND NEITHER ME NOR MY WIFE (PAX) WERE INJURED. THIS WAS A RENTED ACFT. WE LEFT OUR POINT OF DEP WITH FULL FUEL TANKS (GAS SLIP AVAILABLE). ENG INSTS WERE NORMAL (GOOD OIL PRESSURE) WHEN THE ENG QUIT. I DID NOT HEAR ANY CLANKING OR ROUGHNESS WHEN THE ENG QUIT AS IS SOMETIMES ASSOCIATED WITH AN INTERNAL FAILURE. AT THIS TIME I DO NOT KNOW THE CAUSE OF THE ENG FAILURE. I DID NOT LAND AT THE BULVERDE ARPT BECAUSE IT WAS 8-10 MI TO MY L. CAMP BULLIS WAS MUCH CLOSER AND OBVIOUSLY THE CORRECT CHOICE.
