A GOV FLC IN A BE18 DEVIATED FROM THEIR RTE OF FLT AND CAUSED A CONFLICT WITH AN ACR MD80. THE MD80 FLC TOOK NO EVASIVE ACTION; BUT APPARENTLY COMPLAINED TO ATC.
Narrative
WHILE FLYING THE HOLLYWOOD PARK RTE IN AN ACR ACFT THROUGH THE LOS ANGELES CLASS B AIRSPACE WE HAD A DEV OFF THE 140 DEG RADIAL FROM THE VAN NUYS VOR. WE WERE ENRTE TO A SPRAY AREA OVER WOODLAND HILLS AND CHATSWORTH ON THE W END OF THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY AT 8500 FT. N OF LAX WE REQUESTED A HEADING CHANGE FROM THE CTLR AND WAS TOLD TO MAKE THAT REQUEST OF THE NEXT CTLR. WHEN WE CHKED ON WITH THE NEXT CTLR WE WERE FLYING W OF THE 140 DEG RADIAL ON AN INTERCEPT FOR THE FIRST SWATH LINE. THE REQUEST WAS MADE TO THE SOCAL CTLR TO WORK IN THE SPRAY REGION AT 8500 FT. AS I REMEMBER THE REGION WAS CLARIFIED FOR THE CTLR AND THEN HE CALLED OUT AN ACR MD80 AT ABOUT 10 O'CLOCK POS. WE RPTED THE MD80 IN SIGHT. WE WERE THEN TOLD TO FLY N TO THE VAN NUYS VOR BEFORE PROCEEDING ANY FURTHER W. WE ACKNOWLEDGED AND PROCEEDED N UNTIL CLR OF THE BRAVO AIRSPACE. THERE WERE NO EVASIVE MANEUVERS AND SEPARATION FROM THE MD80 IS ESTIMATED TO HAVE BEEN ABOUT 1500 FT LATERALLY AND 300-500 FT VERTLY. THE MD80 PASSED WELL BELOW AND BEHIND US. THE MAIN CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS MY UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE HOLLYWOOD PARK RTE. I NORMALLY USE THE SPECIAL FLT RULES CORRIDOR WHERE WE WERE BELOW THE 5000 FT FLOOR OF THE B AIRSPACE. ON THE HOLLYWOOD PARK RTE YOU ARE IN THE B AIRSPACE AND SHOULD NOT DEVIATE FROM THE 140 DEG RADIAL UNTIL CLR. I BECAME AWARE OF THE PROB WHEN SOCAL CALLED THE TFC AND THEN INSTRUCTED US TO PROCEED NBOUND. THE PROB COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED WITH A LITTLE MORE TIME SPENT IN PREPARING FOR THE RTE. ALSO IT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED IF THE CTLR HAD TOLD ME TO STAY ON THE RTE UNTIL CLR OF THE B AIRSPACE WHEN I MADE MY REQUEST FOR A HEADING CHANGE. AT THAT TIME I WAS HANDED OFF TO A NEW CTLR AND ASSUMED I WAS OK WHERE I WAS WHEN IN FACT I WAS NOT. THE FAULT WAS MINE FOR THE DEV AND I WILL TAKE THE APPROPRIATE MEASURES TO ASSURE THAT IT DOES NOT OCCUR AGAIN.
