PLT OF A MOONEY 20K INADVERTENTLY ENTERED CLASS B AIRSPACE DUE TO PREMATURELY CLBING TO CRUISE ALT AFTER DEP FROM A NEARBY UNCTLED ARPT.

Narrative

ON MAR/XA/99 I WAS RETURNING FROM HAF TO CCR ALONG THE COAST TO THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE THENCE TO CCR. IT WAS A DARK; MOONLESS NIGHT WITH HAZE AND A HIGHER OVCST; AND AS I DEPARTED VFR I WAS ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS TO AVOID INADVERTENT FLT INTO IMC OR TERRAIN AS I CLBED OUT. IN ORDER OF FLYING; I TRAVERSED NEAR B SECTOR J (80/50); K (80/15) AND G (80/15). I CAREFULLY AVOIDED K; AIDED BY A MOVING MAP DISPLAY; BUT PREMATURELY CLBED TO MY PLANNED CRUISE ALT OF 2500 FT WHILE STILL UNDER SECTOR F. I HAD CONTACTED BAY APCH ALREADY WHO GAVE ME A SQUAWK AND VERIFIED MY ALT AS 2500 FT. HE DID NOT CLR ME EXPLICITLY INTO CLASS B (BUT ALSO DID NOT TELL ME TO REMAIN CLR OF CLASS B; AS USUALLY DONE). I REALIZED MY MISTAKE ONLY AFTER LEAVING SECTOR F AND PROCEEDING UNDER G. I SHOULD HAVE MORE CAREFULLY REVIEWED MY CRUISE ALT PLANNING BEFORE DEP AND ALSO COULD HAVE ASKED THE CTLR FOR A CLRNC THROUGH CLASS B WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN SIMPLE AS TFC WAS LIGHT. WHILE EXERCISING CAUTION ABOUT ONE THING; I FORGOT ANOTHER.
