CAPT OF A DORNIER 328 FAILED TO FOLLOW TAXI INSTRUCTIONS DURING TAXI OUT RESULTING IN GND CTL INTERVENTION TO STOP HIM BEFORE GOING ONTO AN ACTIVE RWY.

Narrative

ON MAR/XA/99 WHILE TAXIING FROM COMMUTER PARKING AT DCA (RONALD REAGAN WASHINGTON NATIONAL ARPT) I WAS ISSUED TAXI INSTRUCTIONS FOR RWY 36. AS I TAXIED OUT; I INADVERTENTLY TOOK TXWY S AND CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 15/33. AT THE SAME TIME; DCA GND CTLR TOLD ME TO STOP TAXI AND TO MAKE A HARD R TURN ONTO TXWY N. ALTHOUGH I NEVER MADE IT ONTO THE RWY; I STILL CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE. DCA GND NEVER SAID ANOTHER WORD AND I CONTINUED TO RWY 36 VIA TXWYS N AND J. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS BEHIND THIS UNINTENTIONAL RWY INCURSION ARE FROM PERSONAL PROBS IN MY LIFE. I WAS AT THE TIME UNABLE TO PUT THEM ASIDE AND HAD MY MIND IN ANOTHER PLACE; WHEN I SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONCENTRATING ON THE SAFETY OF THE TAXIING AND THE WELFARE OF MY CREW AND PAX. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: INFORMED MY FO WHAT WAS GOING ON (IE; DIVORCE) AND TO PAY EXTRA ATTN TO INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY ATC AND TO INFORM ME OF ANY INFO OR INSTRUCTIONS THAT I MAY HAVE MISSED. THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY WAS UNEVENTFUL AND I WAS ABLE TO CLR MY HEAD AND CONCENTRATE ON MY JOB.
