FLT ATTENDANT RPT REGARDING THE DIVERSION OF A B767-300 WHEN AN ENG INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON IN THE COCKPIT. MEAL SVC WAS INTERRUPTED AND CARTS STOWED.

Narrative

I REMEMBER A FLT ATTENDANT APCHING ME QUIETLY AND INFORMING ME THAT THERE IS AN INDICATOR ENG LIGHT IN THE COCKPIT AND THAT WE WILL BE DIVERTING TO PHX IMMEDIATELY AND TO PUT EVERYTHING AWAY. WE HAD ONLY DONE SEVERAL ROWS OF THE MEAL SVC. WE STOPPED; COLLECTED TRAYS AND DRINKS; STOWED THE CARTS AND PREPARED TO LAND. WE DID NOT DO AN EMER PREPARATION BUT I WAS ALERT TO THE FACT THAT AN EMER EVAC MAY BE POSSIBLE. WE LANDED UNEVENTFULLY. BEGGED FOR FOOD FOR THE PAX AS MOST OF THEM WERE STARVING. WHEN IT WAS TIME TO TKOF AGAIN; WE WERE INFORMED THAT; WE'LL KNOW WHETHER THE REPAIR TO THE ENG WAS SUCCESSFUL IF THE INDICATOR LIGHT DOES NOT ILLUMINATE. IF IT DID ON TKOF; THEN WE WOULD ABORT THE TKOF. (I DON'T CARE TO BE A TEST PLT.) WE DID TKOF. AGAIN; WE WERE INFORMED THAT WE MAY DIVERT BECAUSE THE INDICATOR LIT UP AGAIN. WE MADE IT TO JFK AND RETURNED ON A DC10. NEXT DAY IN OPS; I HEARD THE SAME PLANE DIVERTED TO ORD FOR THE SAME INDICATOR LIGHT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 432175: THE CAPT CHIMED 4 TIMES. THE #1 FLT ATTENDANT WENT UP TO THE COCKPIT; THEN THE REST OF THE FLT ATTENDANTS WERE TOLD TO PUT OUR CARTS AWAY FOR AN EMER LNDG. WE WERE TOLD NO EMER LNDG PREPARATIONS WERE NECESSARY BECAUSE HE DID NOT SEE ANY PROBS BUT IF WE DID NEED TO EVAC HE WOULD USE THE SIGNALING SYS.
