Narrative

THIS FLT WAS TO BE A TRAINING FLT FOR A FRIEND'S INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATE INST AIRPLANE RATING. I WAS SEATED IN THE L SEAT AND THE STUDENT IN THE R SEAT. WE TOOK OFF AFTER SUNSET FROM THE ORMOND BEACH ARPT IN C152. WE CONTACTED DAYTONA BEACH APCH CTL AND REQUESTED A LCL IFR CLRNC. APCH ASKED US IF WE COULD PROCEED VFR; DUE TO WORKLOAD. SINCE VFR CONDITIONS PREVAILED; WE REPLIED 'YES.' WX WAS ABOUT 6 MI VISIBILITY IN SLIGHT HAZE AND A DARK VFR NIGHT. UNDER VFR ADVISORIES FROM DAYTONA APCH; WE REQUESTED HOLDING OVER DELAND NDB FOLLOWED BY THE NDB 30 APCH TO DELAND ARPT. WE WERE ISSUED HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS; HOLD SE OF DELAND; 314 DEG COURSE TO; EXPECT FURTHER CLRNC XX45Z. AT APPROX XX30Z APR/XA/99; WE WERE OUTBOUND IN THE HOLDING PATTERN IN A SE DIRECTION AT 2500 FT. DAYTONA RPTED TFC ABOUT 1 MI W OF OUR POS AT 2500 FT. I RPTED THE TFC IN SIGHT. THE ACFT (C172) WAS TRAVELING IN A NW DIRECTION AWAY FROM US AND APPEARED TO BE NO FACTOR. WE TURNED INBOUND IN THE HOLDING PATTERN AT 2500 FT; NOW IN A NW DIRECTION. WE PROCEEDED TO TRY AND TRACK INBOUND AND DISCUSSED IF WE WERE ON COURSE. AS WE CROSSED THE STATION; MY STUDENT STARTED A STANDARD RATE TURN TO THE R FOR THE OUTBOUND LEG OF HOLDING. I OBSERVED THE OTHER ACFT'S C172 GREEN NAV LIGHT AND LNDG LIGHT AT ABOUT MY 10 O'CLOCK POS. I TOOK CTL OF MY ACFT AND INCREASED THE BANK AND STARTED A DSCNT. I LEVELED OFF AT 2100 FT APPROX; ON A HDG OF 030 DEGS AND SEARCHED FOR THE OTHER ACFT C172. I OBSERVED THE ACFT BEHIND AND TO MY R SO I STARTED TO CLB BACK TO ASSIGNED ALT AND TURN TO CONTINUE THE HOLDING PATTERN. C172 WAS NOT ISSUED A RADIO CALL TO NOTIFY THEM THAT WE WERE HOLDING OVER DELAND AT 2500 FT; OR TO OUR POS. C172 WAS UNDER VFR ADVISORIES FROM DAYTONA APCH EXECUTING THE 18 DME TO THE ILS RWY 7L AT DAYTONA BEACH ARPT. C172 WAS OFF MY L WHERE MY VIEW IS PARTIALLY OBSCURED BY THE WINDSCREEN FRAME AND AIRFRAME. THE DARK CONDITIONS; ACFT POS; PLT VIEW; CTLR WORKLOAD AND NOT AWARE OF OUR INTENTIONS HOLDING OVER DELAND CONTRIBUTED TO THIS EVENT. SEE DIAGRAMS.
