PVT PLT TAXIED ONTO ACTIVE RWY AT LNA WHILE TFC WAS ON SHORT FINAL.
Narrative
APR/XA/99 AT APPROX XA40; I WAS IN MY ACFT ON THE RUNUP AREA AT THE LANTANA ARPT; LANTANA; FL. THE RUNUP AREA FOR RWY 3 IS LOCATED TO THE L OF RWY 3. I WAS LISTENING TO THE ANNOUNCEMENTS OF ACFT IN THE ARPT TFC PATTERN FOR RWY 3; WHICH WAS IN USE AT THAT TIME. I PROCEEDED TO COMPLETE MY RUNUP; CHKED PRESSURES AND FUEL SELECTION AND PREPARED FOR TKOF. I HAD TFC IN THE PATTERN; TURNING L BASE; IN SIGHT. IT WAS A CESSNA AND PRETTY FAR OUT. ALSO; I WAS LOOKING FOR ADDITIONAL TFC AND DID NOT DETECT ANYONE. ONE ACFT HAD JUST TAKEN OFF; AND I STATED MY INTENTIONS ON UNICOM (122.7 FOR LANTANA) TO ENTER THE RWY FOR DEP. AFTER THE DEPARTING ACFT WAS CLR OF THE RWY AND THE DEP AREA; I CROSSED OVER THE HOLDING LINES AND TAXIED ONTO THE L SIDE OF THE ACTIVE RWY; WHEN I HEARD A PLT OF AN ACFT SAYING; 'NEGATIVE; TWIN OTTER ON SHORT FINAL.' AT THAT MOMENT I SAW THE OTTER TURNING LOW AND FAST ONTO FINAL; COMING DOWN CLOSE TO THE RWY. I STOPPED IMMEDIATELY; STILL BEING ON THE L SIDE OF THE CTRLINE; MAKING A QUICK 180 DEGS TURN AND TAXIED BACK TO THE RUNUP AREA. I HAD NOT TAXIED OUT ALL THE WAY TO LINE UP FOR TKOF. OVER UNICOM I ANNOUNCED THAT I WAS CLR OF THE ACTIVE RWY. PRIOR TO PROCEEDING TO ENTER THE RWY; I HAD NOT HEARD AN EMER CALL OF ANY KIND FROM THE TWIN OTTER AND I WAS NOT AWARE OF ITS PRESENCE IN THE PATTERN. DURING TURNING OFF THE RWY; I SAW ONE OF THE PROPS OF THE OTTER HAD STOPPED; WHILE THE OTHER PROP WAS STILL WINDMILLING. I COULD SEE THE ACFT FLOATING DOWN THE RWY; AND TOWARDS THE END; I LOST SIGHT OF IT.
