FLC OF A SUPER MD80 DECLARED AN EMER DURING A MISSED APCH AFTER A STRONG SMOKE SMELL WAS NOTICED IN THE CABIN AND COCKPIT. CABIN ATTENDANT ALSO FELT HEAT FROM THE AFT CABIN FLOOR.

Narrative

DURING MISSED APCH FROM ILS RWY 35L AT COS DUE TO LOSS OF GS SIGNAL; FLT ATTENDANTS INFORMED COCKPIT OF BURNING ELECTRICAL OR HOT ELECTRONICS SMELL IN THE CABIN; BUT NO VISIBLE SMOKE. SECOND RPT INDICATED SMELL GETTING STRONGER; BUT STILL NO SMOKE; AND SMELL WAS NOW NOTICEABLE IN THE COCKPIT. REQUESTED AN EXPEDITED APCH TO RWY 35L. FLT ATTENDANT ON THE AFT CABIN JUMP SEAT THEN NOTIFIED US THAT THE CABIN FLOOR BENEATH HER FEET WAS GROWING VERY HOT. AT THIS POINT; WE DECLARED AN EMER WITH COS APCH; REQUESTED THE CRASH EQUIP TO BE SCRAMBLED; AND FOR THE FIRE MARSHALL TO BE ON FREQ. FIRE MARSHALL INDICATED NO VISIBLE INDICATIONS OF FIRE ON ROLLOUT AFTER NORMAL APCH AND LNDG. FO WENT AFT TO INSPECT INTERIOR AND RESCUE CREW CHKED EXTERIOR OF ACFT AS WELL AS INTERIOR OF ALL 3 CARGO COMPARTMENTS. WITH NO SIGN OF A FIRE; WE TAXIED TO THE GATE WITH THE EQUIP ESCORTING US AND PAX DEPLANED NORMALLY. FLT ATTENDANTS WERE BRIEFED PRIOR TO LNDG OF THE POSSIBILITY OF A GND EVAC; THE SIGNAL FOR SUCH; AND NOT TO USE ANY OF THE AFT EXITS. TUL TECH SURMISED PROB WAS WITH A FAULTY RECIRCULATION FAN.
