A LNDG FREIGHTER MISSES THEIR TURN OFF AT TXWY S ON RWY 9R AND USES THE OVERRUN TO ACCESS THE WRONG TXWY; Q AT ORD; IL.

Narrative

DURING LNDG ROLL ATC TOLD US TO 'MAKE A R TURN AT THE END' OF THE RWY. THERE WAS A TXWY 1000 FT FROM THE END THAT WE PASSED (THIS IS WHAT THE CTLR INTENDED FOR US). WE CONTINUED STRAIGHT AHEAD UNTIL WE FOUND A R TURN. AFTER MAKING THE TURN WE FOUND OURSELVES ON A TXWY THAT JOINED ANOTHER RWY. WE STOPPED AND QUESTIONED THE CTLR. HE SAID WE WENT PAST THE DESIRED TURN OFF. THE REST OF THE FLT CONTINUED WITHOUT INCIDENT. AFTER REFERRING TO THE ARPT DIAGRAM; THERE WAS A STATEMENT ABOUT THE AREA E OF RWY 9R IS NOT FOR OPERATIONAL USE AND IS PAINTED GREEN. FACTORS: THE CTLR'S USE OF THE PHRASE TURN R AT THE END SHOULD HAVE BEEN 'TURN R ON TXWY S.' WITH THAT STATEMENT; EVEN IF WE COULD NOT MAKE THE TURN WE WOULD HAVE SEEN IT GO BY; AND REQUESTED ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS. THERE WERE NO REILS AT THE ROLLOUT END. NOTE: THE FLASHING HOLD SHORT LIGHTS WERE WORKING. FADED GREEN PAINT DOES NOT STAND OUT AT NIGHT. REFLECTORS WOULD STAND OUT. A MORE THOROUGH READING OF THE ARPT DIAGRAM WOULD HAVE ALERTED ME TO THE END OF RWY LAYOUT.
