FAA EXAMINER; CHKING CFII APPLICANT; ENTERED PHX CLASS B WITHOUT CLRNC; ON A VOR-A MISSED APCH FROM SDL ARPT.

Narrative

WE TOOK OFF OUT OF GLENDALE AND HEADED NE AT 3500 FT. WE REQUESTED THE VOR-A APCH INTO SCOTTSDALE; AZ; FROM PHX APCH. THE CTLR ISSUED US A SQUAWK CODE; GAVE US VECTORS; AND CLRED US INTO CLASS B AIRSPACE. PHX APCH HANDED US OFF TO SCOTTSDALE TWR AS WE WERE INBOUND ON THE APCH. WE WERE TOLD TO RETAIN OUR CURRENT SQUAWK CODE. SCOTTSDALE TWR WAS VERY BUSY; AS USUAL. TWR ASKED US IF WE WERE WITH THEM AND WE ASSURED THEM WE WERE. TWR ASKED HOW THE APCH WOULD TERMINATE. WE INFORMED TWR WE WOULD BE MISSED APCH. WE ARRIVED AT THE MISSED APCH POINT APPROX 500 FT HIGH. UPON MISSED APCH; WE INFORMED TWR AND WERE INSTRUCTED BY TWR TO SQUAWK 1200. WE CHANGED OUR SQUAWK CODE AND CONTINUED THE MISSED APCH PROC. I WAS SO BUSY LOOKING FOR TFC IN THE SCOTTSDALE AREA THAT I DIDN'T NOTICE OUR POS AS COMPARED TO OUR ALT AND THE TERMINAL AREA CHART FOR PHX. I BELIEVE WE PENETRATED PHX CLASS B BY APPROX 200 FT BEFORE DSNDING BACK DOWN TO A LEGAL ALT. I WAS A LITTLE OVERLOADED AS I WATCHED FOR TFC; MONITORED MY STUDENT'S PROGRESS; AND TRIED TO KEEP US CLR OF CLASS B AIRSPACE. I FAILED TO ADEQUATELY MONITOR THUNDERBIRD ROAD; WHICH LED ME TO BELIEVE WE STILL HAD 2000 FT ABOVE US BEFORE WE WOULD ENTER PHX CLASS B AIRSPACE.
