INSTRUCTOR PLTS DURING A TRAINING FLT IN A C172 FAILED TO STOP SHORT OF THE ACTIVE RWY DURING TAXI OUT DUE TO A MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS.

Narrative

THE CLRNC RECEIVED FROM LUNKEN GND CTL WAS TO TAXI ENE ON TXWY A TO RWY 21R; SPECIFICALLY 'TAXI TO RWY 21R; WIND....' WE STARTED TO TAXI NE ON TXWY A TO THE RUN-UP AREA OF RWY 21R. THIS INVOLVES XING RWY 21R APPROX 500 FT BEYOND THE APCH END. THE FLT INSTRUCTOR THAT I WAS TRAINING BROUGHT THE QUESTION UP REGARDING WHETHER WE WOULD HAVE TO HOLD SHORT ON TXWY A; BUT REPLIED TO HIMSELF IMMEDIATELY THAT HE WOULD NOT HAVE TO BECAUSE THE CTL DID NOT SPECIFICALLY ISSUE A HOLD SHORT CLRNC. THE ATIS INFO SPECIFICALLY STATED THAT HOLD SHORT CLRNCS SHOULD BE READ BACK. THIS IS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CURRENT ATC HANDBOOK. I ELECTED TO AGREE WITH INSTRUCTOR ON THE BASIS THAT A SPECIFIC HOLD SHORT CLRNC WAS NOT ISSUED; AS IS THE COMMON PRACTICE AT THIS TWRED ARPT. EXAMPLE: TAXI TO RWY 21R; HOLD SHORT OF RWY 21R ON TXWY A; ACKNOWLEDGED HOLD.' AS WE CONTINUED TAXI; I DID HAVE THE THOUGHT REGARDING THAT OUR CLRNC WAS TO 'TAXI TO RWY 21R' MEANING THAT WE SHOULD HOLD SHORT AT THE FIRST XING OF RWY 21R ACCORDING TO THE AIM AND ATC HANDBOOK. AS WE APCHED THE INTXN; I ALMOST CALLED FOR VERIFICATION; AS I HAVE DONE NUMEROUS OTHER TIMES; BUT DECIDED AGAINST IT DUE TO THE OTHER INSTRUCTOR THINKING THAT WE WERE CLR TO TAXI ACROSS AND THAT WE COULD EASILY SEE THE FINAL AND BASE LEG; WITHOUT ANYONE INBOUND. UPON XING THE GND CTLR ADVISED US OF OUR OPERROR; TO WHICH I APOLOGIZED AND OFFERED MY EXPLANATION OF WHAT I WAS ACCUSTOMED TO AT THAT ARPT. IRONICALLY; AS THIS EXCHANGE WAS OCCURRING; A C152 THAT WAS ISSUED IDENTICAL TAXI INSTRUCTIONS CROSSED THE SAME RWY WITHOUT AUTH RIGHT BEHIND US. OPERRORS ON MY PART INCLUDED NOT ACCEPTING A KNOWN MEANING OF A TAXI INSTRUCTION AND MORE SO; NOT ASKING FOR VERIFICATION. I PRIDE MYSELF ON BEING A VERY PRECISE PLT; AND AM VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT I DID NOT ASK FOR VERIFICATION AS I HAVE DONE LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF TIMES BEFORE.
