S80 CHK AIRMAN ALLOWS IOE TO GO THROUGH EXTENDED CTRLINE BEFORE TAKING AGGRESSIVE CORRECTIVE MEASURES ON APCH TO IAH.

Narrative

I WAS THE CHK AIRMAN ON THE SECOND LEG OF IOE TRIP WITH NEW HIRE FO. WE WERE ARRIVING FROM IAH AND GIVEN VECTORS TO FLY OVER THE TOP AND ENTER A R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 18R. FLYING A 350 DEG HDG AND TOLD TO LOOK FOR S80 TFC AT 3 O'CLOCK ON FINAL RWY 18R. WE WERE DSNDING FROM 5000 TO 3000 FT AND WERE TURNED TO A 080 DEG HDG. AUTOPLT HAD CAPTURED ALT AND I CALLED TFC IN SIGHT. APCH CLRED VISUAL TO FOLLOW S80. I TOLD FO I WAS ARMING HIS ILS FOR GUIDANCE AND THAT HE NEEDED TO DSND TO CATCH UP WITH THE GS. I ALSO ADVISED THAT WE WERE APCHING THE FINAL APCH COURSE. AFTER WAITING I TOLD FO THAT WE WERE PASSING RWY 18R CTRLINE AND TO TURN IMMEDIATELY. HE WAS UNSURE OF WHAT TO DO AND HE DID NOTHING. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK CTL OF ACFT AND MADE A 40 DEG BANK TO RETURN TO THE RWY 18R CTRLINE. APCH CALLED US AND I ADVISED WE WERE TURNING BACK ON COURSE. WE CONTINUED WITHOUT INCIDENT. ASKED FO WHAT HE WAS DOING AND HE REPLIED THAT HE WAS BUTTON PUSHING AND THOUGHT THE AUTOPLT WOULD CAPTURE. I EXPLAINED AUTOPLT WOULD NOT CAPTURE WHEN ON A 90 DEG PATH TO THE RWY. I FULLY DEBRIEFED FO ON NEXT LEG AND HE UNDERSTOOD HIS ERROR AND WHAT THE CONSEQUENCES COULD BE. AS A NEW CHK AIRMAN I LEARNED A LESSON OF NOT LETTING THE SIT GET TOO FAR OUT OF HAND. I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN OVER CTL OF THE ACFT EARLIER. I ASSURE YOU THAT.
