AN EXPERIMENTAL ACFT PLT CLBED ABOVE THE ASSIGNED ALT THEN HAD DIFFICULTY WITH THE DEPICTED BARN TRANSITION FROM SLC.

Narrative

DEPARTING FROM SLC RWY 17; I HAD BEEN GIVEN A CLRNC FROM CLRNC DELIVERY TO MAINTAIN RWY HDG UNTIL 5500 FT. I HAD NOT EXPECTED TO BE ISSUED A TURN UNTIL LEVELING AT 5500 FT. SHORTLY AFTER TKOF; TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO MAKE A L 180 DEG TURN AND JOIN THE DOWNWIND WHILE I WAS STILL OVER THE MIDPOINT OF THE RWY. I BECAME CONCERNED WITH MY CLOSE PROX TO A RADIO CTL ACFT FLYING AREA; AND IN COMBINATION WITH THE UNEXPECTED DEP RTE; I ENDED UP AT 6000 FT. I THEN EXPEDITED A DSCNT TO 5500 FT. SHORTLY AFTER THIS; THE CTLR ADVISED ME TO CROSS THE APCH END OF RWYS 16L&R AND PROCEED ON THE BARN TRANSITION. I TOOK THAT TO MEAN THAT I WAS CLRED TO CROSS THE APCH END OF THE RWY ENVIRONMENT WHILE HDG DIRECTLY TO THE BARN FIX; WHICH TOOK ME A FEW HUNDRED YARDS N OF THE THRESHOLD OF RWY 17L&R. THE CTLR THEN ADVISED ME THAT I NEEDED TO STAY DIRECTLY OVER THE TOP OF THE RWY THRESHOLD. ON THE SLC TERMINAL AREA CHART THE BARN TRANSITION DEPICTION ONLY SHOWS RED ARROWS LEADING FROM THE ARPT TO THE BARN. I FEEL THAT IT MIGHT BE A GOOD IDEA TO SHOW RED ARROWS DIRECTLY OVER THE RWY THRESHOLDS HDG E AND W AS WELL; TO AVOID CONFUSION FOR PLTS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA OF THE TRANSITION RTES.
