A B737-300 CAPT; TAXIING AT PHX; TURNED FROM TXWY D TO TXWY E; OUT OF HABIT; NOT REALIZING THAT HE SHOULD HAVE REMAINED ON TXWY D AS IT HAD JUST BEEN ALTERED TO RUN THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF RWY 8R-26L.

Narrative

PRIOR TO DEP; WE CONTACTED GND CTL FOR TAXI CLRNC. WE WERE ISSUED APPROX THE FOLLOWING: 'TAXI VIA TXWY D TO RWY 8R; HOLD SHORT OF TXWY S.' AT SKY HARBOR ARPT (PHOENIX); EXTENSIVE CONSTRUCTION IS UNDERWAY WHICH HAS RESULTED IN NUMEROUS CHANGES IN TXWY CONFIGNS. PREVIOUSLY; TXWY D WAS A SHORT PARALLEL TXWY TO A PRIMARY RWY 8R/26L. TXWY D ENDED AT TXWYS S AND T; 2 PARALLEL NORTH-SOUTH TXWYS. SINCE COMPLETION OF CONSTRUCTION; TXWY D NOW HAS BEEN EXTENDED THE FULL LENGTH OF RWY 8R/26L. AS WE APCHED TXWY S WHILE TAXIING ON TXWY D; I SLOWED THE ACFT TO A STOP. AT THIS POINT; GND CTL ADVISED US TO 'CONTINUE TAXIING.' OUT OF HABIT; I MADE A SHORT TURN TO TXWY E; WHICH HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE PRIMARY TAXI RTE TO RWY 8R FROM OUR PARTICULAR GATES. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD USED RWY 8R SINCE THE NEW TXWY CONFIGN. NOW; TXWY D WAS A FULL LENGTH TXWY TO RWY 8R JUST LIKE TXWY E. AT THIS POINT GND CTL NOTIFIED US THAT WE WERE NOT CLRED TO USE TXWY E. WE ACKNOWLEDGED OUR MISTAKE AND THEN WERE ISSUED A SUBSEQUENT CLRNC TO TAXI VIA TXWY E TO RWY 8R. NO TFC CONFLICT HAD OCCURRED.
