ON ROTATION FROM ARN (STOCKHOLM); R ENG SURGE FELT IN COCKPIT; LOUD BANGS; EGT RED ZONE BLANK EPR. FLT ATTENDANT RPTED FLAMES FROM R ENG VISIBLE IN CABIN. CREW UTILIZED SURGE/COMPRESSOR STALL CHKLIST; DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED TO LAND ON SAME RWY. R ENG LEFT AT IDLE. ILS APCH FLOWN TO RWY 19. BRAKE FIRE AFTER CLRING RWY SELF EXTINGUISHED. BRAKE ENERGY CHARTS USED TO DETERMINE COOLING BEFORE PAX DEPLANED USING EXTERNAL STEPS. RELIEF PLT IN COCKPIT FOR TKOF ASSISTED IN IDENTING PROB AND RUNNING CHKLISTS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ENG WAS A P&W4060 WITH 25700 HRS AND HAD RECENTLY PASSED A PERFORMANCE TEST TO ALLOW IT TO REMAIN IN SVC. THE RPTR SAID THE FAILURE WAS RPTED TO BE BENT OR DAMAGED TURBINE BLADES AND THE ENG WAS REPLACED. THE RPTR SAID THE R ENG WAS NEVER SHUT DOWN BUT REMAINED AT IDLE PWR THROUGHOUT THE EVENT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR ACN 456502 REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THAT AT ROTATION THE R ENG BEGAN SURGING WITH COMPRESSOR STALLS; HIGH EGT AND LOSS OF PWR. THE RPTR SAID THE ENG OPERATED OK AT IDLE PWR AND WAS NEVER SHUT DOWN. THE RPTR STATED THE ENG WAS REPLACED DUE TO INTERNAL TURBINE DAMAGE.
