Narrative
LEAVING THE GENERAL AVIATION RAMP WITH TAXI CLRNC AS FOLLOWS: TAXI DOWN RWY 31 TO TXWY R; HOLD SHORT OF RWY 30R. AFTER CLRING RWY 31 ONTO TXWY R; A HOLD SHORT LINE CAME INTO VIEW. I FELT THAT THIS LINE WAS FOR RWY 31 AS HAD I STOPPED BEFORE THE LINE IT WOULD HAVE PUT THE ACFT TAIL TOO CLOSE TO RWY 31. THERE WAS NO NOTAM STATING THAT RWY 31 WAS CLOSED; THUS I COULD ONLY ASSUME IT WAS OPEN. SO I CROSSED THIS LINE LOOKING AHEAD FOR THE HOLD SHORT LINE THAT APPLIED TO MY TAXI CLRNC. MOVING AHEAD A SHORT DISTANCE AND NOT SEEING ANOTHER LINE I STOPPED MY TAXI IMMEDIATELY TO PREVENT ENTERING ONTO RWY 30R. AFTER ARRIVING BACK AT MY HOME BASE; DURING A TELEPHONE CONVERSATION WITH STL TWR SUPVR. HE CONFIRMED TO ME THAT THEY HAVE A REAL PROB WITH PEOPLE NOT HOLDING SHORT IN THIS AREA. I BELIEVE BETTER MARKINGS OR SIGNAGE IN THIS AREA IS PARAMOUNT TO PREVENTING THIS TYPE OF OCCURRENCE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR COULD NOT RECALL IF THE HOLD LINE HE SAW WAS BROKEN OR SOLID. HE SAID THE C-550 IS APPROX 55 FT LONG AND HE WAS CONCERNED THAT HIS TAIL WAS OUT ON RWY 31.
