MARSHAL SIGNAL GND CREW FAILED TO SIGNAL FLC OF AN MD80 TO STOP PRIOR TO THE L WINGTIP STRIKING THE JETWAY DURING PARKING.
Narrative
TAXIING IN TO THE GATE AT DSM; I WAS FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THE GND SIGNALMAN. THERE WERE 2 YELLOW LINES AND TURNING THE CORNER I WAS AT FIRST UNSURE WHAT LINE I WAS SUPPOSED TO USE. I LINED UP ON THE YELLOW LINE THAT I WAS GETTING MARSHALED TO AND THE SIGNALMAN WAS GIVING ME THE STRAIGHT AHEAD SIGNAL. WHEN WE WERE APCHING THE PLACE I EXPECTED TO STOP; I WAS GIVEN A HARD R TURN. I FOLLOWED THESE INSTRUCTIONS AND THE L WINGTIP CONTACTED THE JETWAY. I WAS NOT AT ANY TIME UNTIL AFTER CONTACT WAS MADE TO STOP. THE WING WALKER WAS TRYING TO TELL THE SIGNALMAN TO STOP ME BUT FOR SOME REASON HE DIDN'T HEAR OR SEE HIM. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS HAVING 2 LINES AND NOT GIVING ME GOOD SIGNALS AS TO WHAT LINE HE WANTED ME ON. ALSO; RAMP CONGESTION AND OTHER SMALLER ACFT PARKED NEARBY ADDED TO THE PROB. THE BEST CORRECTIVE ACTION I COULD RECOMMEND IS TO HAVE JUST 1 LINE; BETTER ATTN TO THE WING WALKERS BY THE SIGNALMAN AND IF EVER IN DOUBT; STOP THE ACFT AND ESTABLISH INTERPHONE CONTACT WITH THE COCKPIT.
