ACR FLT EXPERIENCES ENG FAILURE AT FL280; DECLARES EMER.
Narrative
FL280 OPS NORMAL; THEN WE HEARD A LOUD COMBUSTION AND A MAJOR YAW OF THE ACFT. A QUICK CONCLUSION WAS ARRIVED WHEN WE OBSERVED THE R ENG INSTS WERE DETERIORATING RAPIDLY. FLT ATTENDANT #1 ADVANCED TO THE COCKPIT BEFORE SHE COULD BE SUMMONED. SHE OBSERVED CHKLIST IN HAND AND ASKED IS EVERYTHING OK. CAPT RESPONDED NO. THE TEST RESPONSES WERE THEN GIVEN TO THE FLT ATTENDANT AND THE ACFT WAS BEING PREPARED FOR LNDG; WITH NO ANTICIPATION OF EVAC AT THIS TIME. THE ENG FLAMEOUT CHKLIST WAS COMPLETED AND THE VOLUME 1 ITEMS REVIEWED. OIL QTY WAS OBSERVED TO BE ZERO; THEREFORE; A RESTART WAS NOT A CONSIDERATION. TUS WAS DIRECTLY ON THE NOSE AND AN EMER WAS DECLARED WITH ZAB. I MADE 2 PA'S TO CALM EVERYONE IN THE CABIN. AS PER THE FLT ATTENDANTS IT WAS DONE VERY WELL. PAX REMAINED CALM AND REASSURED THROUGHOUT THE INCIDENT. ACFT WAS LANDED UNEVENTFUL; FIRE FIGHTERS OBSERVED NO EXTERIOR DAMAGE OR EVIDENCE OF FIRE/SMOKE. ACFT WAS THEN TAXIED TO GATE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. GENERAL MGR TUS; EMER CREW TUS; POLICE TUS; ALL WERE TERRIFIC. WHAT HELPS A CAPT IS A GOOD FO. WE CLICKED LIKE A GOOD DAY IN THE SIMULATOR. LASTLY; MY SINCERE THANKS AND GRATITUDE TO THE GND PERSONNEL AT TUS FOR THEIR SUPPORT; INCLUDING ATC. WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF THESE FOLKS MY JOB WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE DIFFICULT. THANKS TO ALL.
