ACR HAS ELECTRICAL FIRE IN MMTY AIRSPACE AND DIVERTS TO MFE; TX. END RESULT WAS TIRE FAILURE WITH FIRE AND EVAC ON LNDG.

Narrative

WHILE AT CRUISE (FL370) ON RTE UA552 BTWN TIMAS AND CLONN THE FLT SVC MGR RPTED SMOKE IN THE CABIN. THE INSTRUCTOR AND I LOOKED BACK AND COULD SEE A THIN WHITE HAZE. WE DONNED OXYGEN AND I FLEW WHILE HE CONDUCTED THE EMER CHKLIST. MEXICO CTR CLRED US TO DSND AND WE REQUESTED CLRNC TO THE NEAREST SUITABLE ARPT. MEXICO SUGGESTED AN ARPT IN MEXICO (DON'T RECALL WHICH ONE) BUT WE DECIDED ON MC ALLEN (MFE) BECAUSE OUR COMPANY SVCED IT AND WE HAD APCH CHARTS TO MFE. MEXICO HANDED US TO HOUSTON WHO CLRED US TO 11000 FT DIRECT MFE. I TUNED MFE VOR AND CONTINUED DOWN. WHEN THE INSTRUCTOR COMPLETED THE CHKLIST I WAS ON PARTIAL PANEL. TOUCHDOWN WAS IN THE 1000 FT AREA. AT 125 KT REVERSE THRUST WAS APPLIED. AS THE NOSEWHEEL TOUCHED DOWN AT 100 KTS I APPLIED BRAKES AND ALMOST IMMEDIATELY THE L MAIN TIRES BLEW. I KEPT THE ACFT ON CTRLINE AND WE STOPPED ABOUT 800 FT FROM THE END OF THE RWY (7000 FT LONG). THE TWR RPTED FIRE ON THE L MAIN SO I CALLED FOR AN EVAC. THE 17 PAX EVACED WITH ONLY 1 MINOR INJURY. THE CHKLIST DID NOT ALERT US TO THE FACT THAT THE ANTI-SKID WAS INOP WHICH I BELIEVE IS WHY THE TIRES BLEW.
