Narrative

INBOUND FOR FULL STOP INTO ORD. AT APPROX 14 DME; WE WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH FOR RWY 27L. UNDERSTOOD CLRNC AS FOLLOWS: ORD APCH: 'NAVAJO NXX CLRED VISUAL APCH RWY 27L; MAINTAIN 5000 FT AND 170 KTS UNTIL OM; CONTACT TWR AT OM.' AT APPROX 6.7 DME; WE IDENTED THE OM WITH LOM PASSAGE. WAITED UNTIL 61 DME (APCH PLATE OM DISTANCE) AND START A RAPID SLOWDOWN AND DSCNT TO MAKE RWY. CONTACTED TWR. THEY ASKED 'CAN YOU MAKE THE RWY FROM YOUR PRESENT POS/ALT?' WE RESPONDED WITH YES. WE SLOWED TO 120 KTS (APCH SPD FOR NAVAJO AND STARTED RAPID DSCNT). AT APPROX 4.5 DME; THE TWR BROKE US OFF OF THE APCH; HDG 180 DEGS; 5000 FT. APCH INFORMED US THAT WE HAD VIOLATED OUR CLRNC AND SLOWED PRIOR TO THE OM. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 468000: APCH CTL INFORMED ME MY GND SPD WAS AROUND 80 KTS JUST OUTSIDE OF WILLT AND THAT A HVY HAD BEEN GAINING ON ME. I RESPONDED THAT MY INDICATED AIRSPD WAS 170 KIAS (WIND WAS APPROX 20 KTS). HE DISAGREED. TOLD ME TO CLB TO 5000 FT. I WAS VECTORED AROUND FOR ANOTHER APCH TO RWY 27. THE APCH WAS EXECUTED AT 160 KTS; BEGAN DSCNT FROM 5000 FT; CONTACTED TWR OVER WILLT; REDUCED AIRSPD TO 120 KIAS AND LANDED. IN SUMMATION; I HAD BEEN FLYING SINCE XA00 MAR/XA/00 AND FLEW THROUGH THE NIGHT AND MORNING; HAVING BEEN TO ORD EARLIER DURING MY DUTY PERIOD. THE SUN WAS ABOVE AND BEHIND US; WASHING OUT THE LIQUID QUARTZ DISPLAY ON THE RADIOS FROM DIRECT SUNLIGHT AND GLARE. MARKER WAS NOT TURNED ON. ORD 154 DEG RADIAL WAS DIALED IN; USED THE TAFFS LOM TO IDENT WILLT. I WAS TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION WAKE TURB FROM THE JETS LNDG IN FRONT OF ME AND NEXT TO ME FOR PARALLEL APCHS ON RWY 27R TO MAKE SENSE OF THE CLRNC I THOUGHT I HEARD. ALSO; THE STRONG WINDS HAD ME CONCERNED WITH THE WAKE TURB.
